Virtually every unit of significant size in the Roman army, from centuria and up (a centuria is a grouping of about 80 men) possessed a standard of some kind, with several featuring a shape and form similar to this Pretorian Standard. Like many standards, this piece is primarily a decoration carried into battle that identifies the unit gathered around it. This standard is an impressive serious of trinkets and designs, all stacked one after the other to create an impressive design in polished brass that builds upon itself. At the top is a small cross-bar from which hangs two red tassels. The standard is attached to a wood shaft adorned with two metal bars for carrying. To some degree, a standard like this Pretorian Standard would be considered a badge of honor to for the unit it belonged to and those solders would fit to keep their standard held aloft in battle. This Pretorian Standard is a striking piece that would look great when held aloft alongside other marching Roman re-enactors, as well as a great display piece to include in any collection of Roman pieces or artifacts.
