Has anyone tried filling it with dryer lint for the birds to build their nests?

Do not put out dryer lint, yarn or any other man made materials. This is dangerous for the adult and baby birds as the material can become entangled around their legs or body. There are plenty of natural materials for birds to create nests. This information is from a wildlife rehabilitator.

Would shell-less seed work for this? LIke the shelled sunflower seeds? I live in an apartment complex, and need to get the no waste type.

Do the seeds get wet in the rain?

While the seeds will get wet in the rain, the feeder has drainage holes in the bottom and the diamond mesh keeps the seeds well ventilated so the seeds stay fresher, longer.

Nyjer (Thistle Seed) is imported from Africa and Asia. Nyjer won't germinate, however, it has a tendency to become moldy due to lack of air circulation. If you notice mold on the seed, it must be removed from the feeder and the feeder must be cleaned thoroughl This is in the description of seeds that can be used in this feeder, but Amazon says DO NOT USE IN THIS FEEDER in this discussion. Which is it?
