desertcart.com: Justice League (2016-2018) Vol. 1: The Extinction Machines (Justice League (2016-)) eBook : Hitch, Bryan, Daniel, Tony S., Daniel, Tony Salvador: Kindle Store Review: Enjoyable and interesting - Recommend taking time to read this one. Great art and great writing. Looking forward to the sequel very much. Thumbs up! Review: A new type of menace. A thoughtful story-line. - I received a copy of this graphic novel/comic from the publisher (DC) through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Very interesting story line. Surreal almost at times. The artwork was imaginative and blended well with the prose. Really enjoyed this title and would be interested in reading the next in this series. Clearly comics have moved beyond the concept of a story revolving around one big fight and address larger themes like environmental issues and human psychology. Even Superman has limits, both physical and emotional. Well done.

Big, Loud Action that Has Good Character Beats But Feels More Like Setup for Future Arcs
The first volume of Rebirth's Justice League is ok, but nothing particularly mind blowing. In a lot of ways it reminds me of a big, loud summer blockbuster movie. It is almost all big action and world ending threats with not enough connective tissue or good character beats to offset the on going chaos. The Justice League picks up with the Rebirth solo issue in which the team is forced to repel an alien invasion ship with the help of new members Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz (Earth's two newest Green Lanterns who are taking over Hal's job of guarding the planet while he's off in space leading the rest of the Corps). The team also gets a hand from the new Superman who has recently revealed himself. The team doesn't know what to make of the man who looks and frankly is the same guy as the friend they just lost, but Batman wants to keep a closer eye on this new Supes until they can figure out where he comes from. From there we get to the titular Extinction Machines arc in which a bunch of world ending calamities befall the planet at the same time. The League discovers a cluster of massive machines in the Earth's core that are creating mass earthquakes capable of tearing the planet apart. Meanwhile, another alien invasion is being launched at the planet. Finally, a group of mysterious beings called the Kindred are psychically controlling many people of Earth while sapping the powers of some some JL members. The sad fact is that the book doesn't do the best job of explaining how all these crises are linked together or where these new threats originate from. It seems the Extinction Machines in the core and the alien bug invasion (the Purge) are meant to stop the Kindred from their mysterious goals, but that is about all we get. As I said it is loud, big scale action for the sake of big scale action. In certain ways it reminds me of the classic 80's Invasion! story arc in that there is a massive scale of destruction with few actual consequences (a tough sell in the modern era when fans get so worked up about the potential loss of life in movies like Avengers or Man of Steel). The main saving grace of the book is the solid artwork and the good character interactions. It is fun seeing Simon and Jessica play off one another and struggle to fill Hal's shoes on the team. I was hesitant about there being two Green Lanterns on the League at the same time, but the manner in which Simon and Jessica depend on one another to overcome each other's weaknesses make them very engaging. Also the interplay between Batman and the new Superman remains a great aspect of the book, with the former attempting to build a sense of trust with the latter like he had with the previous New 52 Supes. The only character downfall is that Aquaman is stuck on his own solo adventure the whole time involving magic crystals (?) and doesn't get to interact with the rest of the team at all. Overall, a decent opening that sets up plenty of future arcs but at the expense of being a knockout opening volume.

Good Justice League story
Somebody has to save the world from a really weird invasion/destruction. Justice League joins together to get the job done. Decent read for League fans.

Good.
Great. Story. People need to stop being so picky. Stories need a little refresh from time to time. It's good to have classic Superman back.

A so-so start to what should be DC's banner title
A so-so start to what should be DC's banner title. Strong art, but the "big evil" they are fighting is fairly obscure and underdeveloped... The strengths of the story come from the relation between Superman and the rest of the team, especially Batman. The flirtation between the Flash and Jessica is too quick and comes across as childish. The rest of the cast are basically cookie cutter. This is a title that really has to build character and relations to work, but so far the author has just sort of assumed we'll care.

great book to kick off the re irth saga although I did prefer the new 52 more than this. Still need a fleshed out backstrory on this new Superman

it's not great but it is good... there is potential, the story was a bit vague and generic but still okay

I don't really understand why there is so much hate on this specific Rebirth series. Justice League comic books are known for their action-pack; move-like atmosphere, which this story has demonstrated. The story was easy to understand and the artwork is amazing. I do recommend giving this book a try!

Plot a little difficult to follow Not sure who the kindred or the purge were? Who was good and who was evil? Maybe that was the point. Very intrigued to find out what happened to this earth Superman,. Very enjoyable though I am looking forward to the next one

Great read for introducing the new superman and how he works with Justice League. The threat was little amusing though
