We might bed into an area with hard water this summer. Installing a softener system is low on our priority list.I’ve been adding this to our bath water and dishwater. No spots on the dishes, my hair isn’t flat, im not getting that hard water eczema… and it really lady’s, too! A little goes a long way.

Buy it, use it, you can wash your food in it and it won't hurt you. Sodium Hexametaphosphate was banned in soaps and detergents not because it caused harm but because it made nutrients too readily available (causing blooms of certain species of organisms at the cost of others). If you aren't discharging into a stream or the ocean there is nothing to object to in this product. If you live in a strongly perking environment and discharge into a septic or run your grey-water to plants, this will improve everything about your system.

I specifically purchased this product because the photo shows a rigid container, however this arrived in a bag...

Sodium hexametaphosphate is meant to soften water, but it didn't for mine, in fact, it made it harder! The one on the very left is my control, and the ones on the right are the ones I added the sodium hexametaphosphate and it shows on the 2nd lowest row that it increased the hardness!
