For once, a record label actually gives us more bang for the buck, combining two indisputable classics--1969's self-titled debut and the 1970 follow-up Idlewild South --onto one glorious CD. Five urgent notes kick off Spencer Davis's "Don't Want You No More," and by the time that searing instrumental morphs into Gregg Allman's superb slow blues "It's Not My Cross to Bear," it's clear these Georgians mean business. Everyone talks of the Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon covers, the furious twin leads of Duane and Dickey Betts, Gregg's soulful voice and formidable organ, the percussion attack of Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, but what about the songwriting skills? Just start with "Cross to Bear," "Whipping Post," "Dreams," "Revival," "Elizabeth Reed"--are you kidding? These two records blend gritty blues, Southern soul, and psychedelic rock into an exciting creation, and they serve notice: the Allmans will contend for the title of best American rock & roll band. --Marc Greilsamer This Allman Brothers classic comes home to Capricorn Records sporting remastering from the original master tapes and packaging authentic to the original LP release (2 complete LPs on 1 CD). Tracks include "Trouble No More," "Dreams," "Whipping Post," "It's Not My Cross to Bear," "Midnight Rider," "Hoochie Coochie Man," "Leave My Blues at Home" and much more. Review: The Sound That Still Hits Hard Today - This remastered collection brings the Allman Brothers Band to life with clear, powerful sound while keeping that original raw energy intact. It is easy to let play from start to finish, with every track showing strong musicianship and that classic Southern rock feel that never gets old. Review: Underappreciated Masterpiece(s) - "Beginnings" is the joining of the Allman Brothers Band's first two albums, which were both underappreciated masterpieces considering how tasty, tight, & timeless the music is. I had no idea they were not commercially successful albums that did not place high on the charts until I recently read Gregg Allman's book "My Cross To Bear," and heard him say during a recent interview that they both stayed around 200 "with an anchor." I have been listening to the ABB for about 40 years. I bought the albums individually as "The Allman Brothers Band," and "Idlewild South" when they first came out, then bought the repackaged "Beginnings" album version, and only recently bought the cd. I appreciate the music as much now if not more than when it was first released. Individually each musician is an artist in his own right, but together the ABB produces a fluid, seamless, flow of music as their voices & instruments meld into a musical tapestry of hard driving rock, blues, & soul. "Revival," the first track on Idlewild South, was the first ABB song I heard in the early 70's. I liked the happy, optimistic, upbeat tempo, and bought both of the aforementioned albums. I had no idea what lay in store, but what a musical treat it was ! Gregg Allman's guttural, throaty voice conveys a feeling of truth & conviction. Coupled with his organ I get the feeling he has experienced what he is singing. The dual guitar work of Duane Allman & Dicky Betts complements each other so well that as the music transitions from Duane's lead to Dicky's it seems as if it could be the work of one guitarist, but there is a difference in their sound with Duane having a smoother sound to Dickey's harder edged playing. Berry Oakley is at his bass playing best on "Hoochie Coochie Man," and his lead vocals are superb. He is just as solid a musician on every track, but really stands out on "Hoochie Coochie Man." The combination of Butch Trucks & J J Johanson on drums are in a class by themselves. They too complement each others playing so well it is as if they are playing as one. But that is what makes the ABB. The fact is they play so well together it's easy to forget they are individuals that came together as a group because they play as one.

A Great 2 for 1 Disc.
A more bang for your buck offering, this CD collects the first two LP's from the band. The Allman's were simply amazing!

Beginnings ?
Just one more morning I had to wake up with the Blues, Pull myself out of It, Put on My Walking Shoes, The first verse of this song speaks to my life more now than when I was first introduced to this Album at the age of 14 sitting on the Cliffs in a 1960 VW Bus overlooking the Surfbreak known as Tamarack in Carlbad CA drinking a Tall Coors when a man that would later become my guardian as my Father had asked me to move out the 2nd week of my senior of High School which to me was a joke. High School that is, not the asking me to leave part. Having grown up 1 mile from the beach and now living 17 miles from it the statement was my ticket to head to the coast and perfect what had become my sport Surfing so when my father said move out I grabbed my quiver of surfboards and began a surfing odyssey that would almost plant me on the north shore of Hawaii at the ripe age of 17. I had perfected my craft, almost. What does this have to do with the review, its about what music is, something good, something different to each and everyone or sometimes the same who knows. If you like Gregg Allman and the guitar playing of a Southern Rock, Blues Giant like Dickey Betts then this Album will take you places you have only dreamed of. So put it on grab some head phones or do what I do turn on the stereo and let it RIP!!!!! The song Dreams is like an Anthem to my life and having become disabled from worthless back surgeries this music takes me back to times more traveled and lets me live again!!! Peace Out, Obama Sucks and so do MORE GUN LAWS

Best music ever
You would have to be a fan of the Allman Bros Band to understand the magnificence of this set. It contains their first 2 studio albums with the 6 original members. Every song a masterpiece. Ya gotta buy it and hopefully appreciate it.

It”s the Allman Brothers when they were starting!
Keep in mind Greg Allman was 22 when this was first released. Yes the deep gravel, growling voice was from a very Greg and it was only the beginning. I have all of this music on a prebuilt cd and LP but I wanted the remastered copy just to listen to the crisp recordings that we done over fifty years ago. Just put it on and enjoy them all over again.

Good, But Poor Re-Mixing
Great Band at the top of their game. Great Set, one of the better live sets of the Allman Brothers Band. But I have a bone to pick with the producers of the CD. The opening two cuts, I Don't Want You No More and Its Not My Cross to Bear are one song. The Brothers blended them into each other in a seamless wonder that was inspirational. What did the producers do? They chopped up these two songs. I had to buy the original album and record them on the computer to preserve the artists original recording. This was irritating and shows that the producers were more interested in conformity than artistic intent. Grrrrrrr. End of rant.

Maybe the Greatest American Band
The Allman Brothers Band are a wonderful blend of blues and rock. The genesis of their success is producing creative covers of blues standards rather than slavish imitations of the originals.Beginnings actually combines two albums: The simply titled first LP:Allman Brothers and Idlewild South. Both are stand out sessions in their own right. Idlewild South has more ear candy in terms of songs such as;Revival , In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Midnight Rider. The Allman Brothers album is straight blues/rock done quite tastefully. It contains the studio version of Whipping Post that became a staple of their live shows. Though this is classic 70's music it holds up extremely well over time due to the Allman's uncomplicated, straightforward style. This disc is indispensable for fans of the Allman Brothers or the Blues/Rock genre.

Duane Allman is still alive and playing well throughout this disc
Released in 1973... "BEGINNINGS", Covers all the early greats by the ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. Duane and Gregg are both in attendance along with the same band that was playing on the FILLMORE EAST DISC. This must have been one of the last recordings including Duane before he passed away in his motorcycle accident...Should you be missing the FILLMORE disc Beginnings would be a great substitute to have. It really has the same vibe as the other disc but is more or less a continuation of that Fillmore gig. Beginnings also has a number of cuts which are not included on Fillmore, so there is also that to take into consideration, it tends to be overlooked due to Fillmore's notoriety ( fame ), but it is a very good disc in its own right, and well deserving of its own space in your collection.

The Allman Brothers Band Beginnings
Premesso che gli Allmann brothers sono uno dei miei gruppi preferiti, ho trovato questo cd molto molto bello. Raduna in un solo cd I primi due storici lp del gruppo. Qualita' della registrazione buona(meglio il secondo episodio). Consigliatissimo agli appassionati.
