Part of recall?
Five stars to get attention to concern: This is important. I thought it was my imagination, wondering what I had recently eaten..or if I had contracted something. That’s when I read that there was a recall by Hormel on some of the Planters peanut products due to Listeria bacteria. Can I prove my severe stomach/abdominal pains over two to three days were from the two cans of Spanish peanuts consumed prior and during? Not without sending the peanuts to a lab. I was just relieved the pains subsided, and that I read the news article, also announced by the FDA on their recall website. I did not attempt to get an Amazon refund for the 6-pack of cans, as only three were unopened, and would not want to send back for fear someone else may consume. I did, however, contact Hormel customer service. They listened and sent me a questionnaire to fill out, which I did. They advised that they had not received any complaints about listeria possibly in the Spanish peanuts, but that they would be analyzing the sample from the batch that I had consumed. As others have commented, the Spanish peanuts were very dry and kind of tasteless, unlike previous purchases of these Spanish peanuts, which were delicious. Also, many had the shape of small peanuts, rather than the more pea shaped Spanish peanut. Hormel said they would let me know the results of the lab analysis…in about a month. Will have to find another brand going forward. One more thing: I offered to send the Spanish peanuts back to Hormel so that they could test them for Listeria. They were not interested in receiving any returns…nor did they offer anything in the way of refund, etc. Just a thanks for filling out the questionnaire. Update: shortly after my original review was posted, I received a letter from Hormel stating that “this product is made in large batch quantities. If food poisoning micro-organisms existed in a batch, they would not be isolated to one container but rather would be found throughout the batch. Our records indicate this is not the case. Strict quality control procedures are followed to ensure that only products of the highest quality and wholesomeness are made available to our customers. In addition to this, our production facilities are in compliance with regulations regarding food safety.” The timely response is appreciated. However, all that being said, as mentioned, there were recently recalls issued for peanut products, presumably produced under the same conditions, in the same facility, with the same QC protocols. Somehow, these batch produced products had listeria in them and still made their way to consumers. I would have more faith in any assurances had the actual product that I purchased been tested. To be fair, Hormel did send me four(4) $4.00 manufacturers coupons with their recent correspondence.
