NYOS Nitrate (NO3) Reefer Aquarium Test Kit

I’ve used a lot of test kits- from Red Sea, to salifert and API, but this is fins down the BEST overall kit I’ve ever used. It’s not just the wider color differentiations, or the increased result comparison options…it’s the little details. You get TWO vials, so you can look down thru a vial of sample water w/o reagents side-by-side next to your colored test sample- this gives you a much more accurate idea of resulting color- in addition to the foam comparator that holds the two samples together over the color chart. I feel like this separates and focuses the lighting over the samples, while focusing your eye more readily over the samples, which gives a more accurate comparison to judge your result by. I’d give this kit 10 stars if I could! I read some reviews with complaints about the dropper in the test reagent 1, but I didn’t experience any of those issues. I’m SO glad I chose this kit, and will never use any other kit!

The color chart is very easy to read.

I like this kit, but I can't say I love it. It is pretty accurate and not too difficult to use but I would like more resolution and I don't like the bottle that is used for adding drops of reagent. The bottle seems like it is more than 1/2 empty and is not the best bottle I have seen. It feels kind of cheap and fragile. I would have preferred that you raise the price, get a better bottle and then fill it. I also have not really fell in love with adding the powder. Its not bad but opening and closing the little glass vial makes me think I am going to slip and end up spreading it around the room. The little vials for water are great. They are the same as the powder, but for liquids they are not as bad since it is only water. And I like the lids better than the test for the API test kits. The color comparitor is beautifully printed and accurate, but I wish it was a little heavier and better waterproofed. It is better than the API test, but I don't love it right now. (I wish Hanna would make a colorimeter for saltwater nitrates)

Great product, easy to read nitrate test kit.

Where to begin at how jank of an excuse this ‘test’ kit is. The dropper bottle is the poorest quality I’ve ever seen to dispense a reagent. The bottle starts dripping with the smallest tilt. Upon trying to shake the bottle, reagent leaked from the seams and splashed everywhere. The 5mL syringe arrived cracked so is unusable. This kit also comes with 2-3x as much of the powder reagent as you’ll need. Honestly the quality and chemical accuracy of this kit is as if it was designed by a group of children doing their first science fair gig where they 3D printed the reagent bottles, caps and syringe expecting it to be completely accurate. Regarding the chemical accuracy of these tests, it’s consistently off by about 5ppm (reads lower than ICP has ever revealed when testing stock solutions in the 5-10 range). The only thing that makes this kit stand out is the color comparison chart which isn’t even that helpful considering how inaccurate the measuring equipment they provide is, always leading to different shades of color when retesting the same water Or stock solutions back to back. Overall a cheap and inaccurate product that uses the poorest quality equipment possible to provide a rebranded, and less accurate, nitrate test than API. API has a focus on chemical accuracy at least, and only requires you to shake a reagent bottle as an extra step when compared to this NYOS excuse of accuracy. It’s funny how all the positive reviews have no mention about the actual product capabilities or quality (dispenser bottle, measurement spoon, how the caps leak every time you remove it) but focus on how ‘easy’ it is to read their good test results when in reality these kits read 1-5 ppm lower. Must be a bit excited over lower nitrate readings. I’ll stick with more accurate measurements over the false confirmation bias of why I spent $25 to get useless measurements. Granted I only purchased this kit once, it was enough to really showcase the money minded strategy of this company.

Very accurate test kit I highly recommended for nitrate the only small thing that could be better is the Regent dropper the drops come out a little bit too fast so I recommend tilting the bottle to slow down to drops but other than that it is a excellent test kit and I highly recommended

I wish all tests were like this. You fill one tube with your sample and one with plain water. You put both tubes in a spacer with the plain water on top of the colored circle and your sample on top of the white circle. This allows you to look from the top down and simply slide your tubes over the scale until you find the closest match. The API Nitrate kit was always impossible for me to read with any accuracy, this is much better.

I have been using this test kit since May after my Red Sea Pro kit expired. BRS had recommended it in one of their videos and it was prime eligible so I gave it a shot. It is a real simple test kit doesn't have the same chemist feel the Red Sea kit has but most others don't either. Real easy to perform the test only has two steps 5 drops of reagent shake 1 scoop of second shake a minute wait 5 minutes for results. The Red Sea test has three steps and a 9 minute wait time. My nitrates stay pretty low so I can only say the color for 1mg/l is easy to match up. I compare the colors in sunlight I was told that is the best way with color matching tests. The colors on the chart seem easy to differentiate. The Red Sea test always seemed off in color especially between the card and the color wheel. I would recommend this kit if your looking for something new. Two minor cons: One: The caps for the test vials snap on. I don't like this. They leak unless you squeeze down on it when shaking. Never had that issue with a screw on cap. (Hanna Checker and Red Sea) Two: This goes for most all test kit manufacturers. PLASTIC STORAGE BOX. I've spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on my reef tank I will splurge the extra 5 dollars for a case for a test kit that is being used around water. As soon as I got this kit I threw out the cardboard box and it is now in my old Red Sea nitrate test kit box (Sorry Nyos)

Easiest one to use out of the several I have tried

Product itself is amazing. 10/10 Box was in horrible shape but nothing was broken. I just like to keep my test kits in their original box but this time I had to throw it out. It was so damaged that the box was open when I got the item (thank you for packing it in a sealed envelope so I didn’t lose any parts). Was not unexpected considering the 3+ weeks of shipping it took. Lots of things can happen at the back of shipping trucks.
