Cheating Death: The Doctors and Medical Miracles that Are Saving Lives Against All Odds [Gupta MD, Sanjay] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Cheating Death: The Doctors and Medical Miracles that Are Saving Lives Against All Odds Review: A worthwhile read! - I found this publication to be a very informative documentation of the cutting edge medical research and practice used today. I appreciated that the author's review of such research and practice examined the work of doctors, paramedics, and scientists from various parts of the world. While the book mainly focuses on saving the lives of adults who suffer from various types of ailments (such as cardiac arrest and cancerous tumors) and accidents (such as near-drowning and car accidents), it also looks at the beginning of life and in-utero conditions that threaten the life of the near-born. The information is presented in a very easy to read narrative form, so the book is quite a fast-read. However, the topic is so important, I would hope that readers will pause to reflect on the significance of what is reported. While Gupta does not definitively state that he believes in miracles, he does sensitively address the question of what is death from both a medical and spiritual perspective. I highly recommend this book. Review: Tells us what we need to know. Very well written. - Dr. Gupta is a gift to us all. This is a need to read at any age!

Engaging Read
I gave this book as a gift. Just two weeks later, the gift receiver called to say how fascinating and engaging the book is. She expected it to be good but perhaps more technical in its format, but she said the author is an exceptional writer and storyteller. She found herself two-thirds of the way through the book in no time at all and can't wait to read more. Now I'm looking forward to reading it!

Cheating Death Review
One of the most inspiring books I have ever read. As a premed major myself, I appreciate the different medicinal cases and how death is literally cheated. I learned many life lessons and medicinal terminology. It is most certainly a good read.

Should be required reading for all the medical profession, EMTS and 911 Operators
My brother was saved by almost immediate start of hypothermia treatment by EMTS and Hospital in Florida this past February. He had a heart attack during a bike ride, was observed falling to ground by a vacationing couple who performed CPR and called 911. EMTS arrived within a very few minutes detected no heartbeat and started CODICE(cold sallien injection) treatment on unconscious male enroute to hospital. Hospital packed him in ice and induced a coma. Installed a stint and after 2 days he was brought out of the coma. Two days later he was released from hospital with no mental impairment. CHEATING DEATH tells the story of other medical emergency incidents that by classical treatment protocols would most likely not have been successful. The book shows new beneficial treatments to save the brain as medicine progresses in this century.

Fascinating stories of unexpected survival
Well written and has fascinating stories of unexpected survival. Held my interest and had a hard time putting it down. In many ways it is the opposite of another very popular medical narrative called Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. In my opinion both excellent.

Interesting information but I don't like the way it was written. It is sort of an alarming book for someone who is not medically educated. I am a nurse and my neighbor a doctor but we felt it was dry.

My Turn
My wife bought the book for me at my request. I found it absolutely fascinating. I typically do not read many books, but the flow of this fit my style perfectly and I had a hard time putting it down. I have had several cheating death experiences, so reading about others and being able to relate was very amazing. It brought back many memories in an appreciative way. Thank you for the journey.

being a surgeon in a university hospital what this book provided to my students as I recommended they read it was a build up of discipline and conscience in their work. and of course the need of having strict measures for the skills and ethics of practice. to me it was a superb teaching tool. dr diaa.

Human life expectancy has increased a lot over the past century - largely due to important breakthroughs in the world of medicine. In this fascinating book, the author introduces the reader to a several physicians and scientists who are trying to push back the frontiers of knowledge on how the human body works and on the subject of death - this, in order to find ways to prolong human lives even more. In eight absorbing chapters, the reader is introduced to various medical techniques that have proven useful in this regard and in which advances are still being made. These include: benefits of lowering the body temperature of trauma/cardiac patients, proposed improvements to CPR, the nature and potential uses of suspended animation and pre-natal surgery. Near death experiences are the subject one riveting chapter while seemingly miraculous recoveries are the subject of another. Although the author is a practicing neurosurgeon, his role in this book is mainly that of a reporter; he has interviewed (and quoted) several medical specialist as well as patients in order to produce these spellbinding accounts. His prose is lively, clear, friendly, accessible and authoritative, and the personal stories that are recounted are quite captivating. This is a book that throws a new light on our understanding of death, when it occurs, and how the experts are trying to cheat it. This is a book that can be enjoyed by anyone.
