NBA Rookie Gear® Composite Basketball

I recently bought this basketball for my 8 year old son. He has never played basketball and after reading various reviews on several websites, I decided this was the right ball for him. I found that Amazon had the best price and since I am a Prime member I got it in 2 days with free shipping. I have not been disappointed with my choice. It fits his hand nicely so he can learn to dribble the ball and it is a little lighter as the specifications indicate, so he can practice his hoops. He plays with it on the driveway and it performs well. This basketball is made of a composite leather and even though I know nothing about basketballs, my husband was very pleased with my choice. It is just the size our son needs until he has mastered some basic skills of the game.

This ball has a specific purpose. It’s durable as long as you keep it stored indoors. This ball is lighter and smaller which is intended for youth play typically in Pre-Kinder to First Grade (4 to 6 yr olds). This ball is to encourage the children towards basketball and build their confidence in ball-handling and to make a basket on an 8 foot rim. Check with your youth basketball organizations on the standards ball sizes and rim heights. Our league moves to from Size 7 (Pre-K to First), Size 8 (2nd to Fourth) and Size 9 / Adult Men (5th grade +). This applies to boys. Girls will stay with the Size 8 ball. Your local youth league may vary.

I bought the ball in Summer '09 for my 3 year old because I was going to enroll him in the local buddy basketball league for 4-6 year old and I wanted to get a head start on his form. This is the perfect ball for that age group and should really be considered as the standard ball for leagues that service that age group. This ball weighs 25% less than standard youth basketballs which enables the youngest ballplayers to shoot in a manner than more closely resembles the style of shot that the will use later in their careers. If anyone has ever noticed how most young players shoot a basketball they have noticed that the put the ball next to their ear and fling moreso than shoot the basketball and it ends up going off to the side. This ball allows them to keep a more natural shot. In summary, I think that this a great new type basketball for the youth market and feel like you will see more and more leagues adopt it. I give it a 10 out of 10.

Seemed like a decent quality ball- perhaps a bit over priced. My big complaint was that it said the ball would come inflated. Well, it came inflated but not enough to bounce! It was very disappointing as it was gift so I had to rush to a sporting goods store to get it inflated. That’s where I realized I could have spent $14 instead of $20. Lesson learned.

I wanted a basketball that was as authentic as possible, the perfect siZe (not too small or big) for my 7-yr-old nephew, and of course, at a good price. If that's what you're looking for (if you are serious about basketball) this one is perfect for you. It is good, composite leather so it can be used indoors and outdoors. Over time, of course, it will wear down considerably if used outside often (saw a friend of mine's ball)..so I'd recommend trying to only use it in a gym although it is made for outdoor courts as well. Great ball, great price, perfect size for a young child to use for learning how to dribble and shoot.

Young granddaughter has taken a liking to playing basketball. We purchased the one we did as to keep hers separate from the boys. No hassle’s necessary. Reasonable priced and quality great, I feel this will entertain them for hours.

This ball is perfect for someone learning how to dribble and shoot a basketball. Most little kids won’t get a normal size basketball to the rim of the basket unless they are super strong. This ball bounces well, is small enough for my four year old to handle, and light enough that he can dribble and shoot it easier. I’d recommend for any beginner to start with this size and weight ball.

Superior product; perfect for my guy's little hands (don't get me wrong at three years old he is not palming it but that's not the point) and much lighter than the next youth product up the chain. I inquired at many "sports specialty" stores locally and was unable to obtain a high quality size 3 ball. The ball is well balanced and consistent with the quality of the senior Spalding basketball designs that I have used. If you have a youth that is working with a proper basketball for the first time this ball is for you!

Well I never got a greeting at my niece's like that before. Her kids were waiting at the door and we never got our feet on the driveway before we received our calvacade of "Thank Yous". The good quality balls were quickly taken from my wife and my hands and were ripped out of the packaging, pumped up and out with names sharpied on were out the door and down the street to the neighborhood hoops. A week later after hard use I saw the eldest's b-ball and even after hard use was holding up well. I'll see what it looks like this fall. I still smile when I think of their joy of a brand new ball.

This ball is excellent. Use it in our driveway. Perfect for my 10 year but my 5 year old is also learning to handle it. Dribbles very well, smooth, excellent bounce. I enjoy this one out of the various sizes we have as well. I have smaller hands. The kids love the colourfulness - and i do too - easier to keep track of ;) Great quality!
