BORIS has always demolished expectations of what a band can do musically and aesthetically. In keeping with that tradition, they again flip the script for the bands first official release in three years buy serving up their most all-encompassing effort to date. Noise is an amplification of BORIS endless pursuit of musical extremes while moving aggressive, intense rock into new territories.

My rating is actually 4.5 stars.Boris are back after last year's stellar Praparat album, a limited vinyl-only release that was, for me, their best effort in quite some time. Thankfully Noise continues with the band's return to form, offering up the truly gorgeous heaviness they've perfected so well. Whereas Praparat had more of a shoegazer vibe to it, Noise has passages of quiet ambience and delicacy that offset the mammoth riffs. In addition to the slower, doomier jams however there are some really great barnburners here. It gives Noise a more eclectic feel to it, offering up something for nearly every Boris fan, yet the album manages to feel cohesive as a whole. Oh, and despite being titled "Noise" there's no Merzbow on this album. It's actually quite un-noisy by the band's standards.Overall a great release from Boris that's sure to please fans. If you're new to the band, I think this is a great place to start as well.Favorite tracks: Vanilla, Heavy Rain, Angel, and Quicksilver.Note: In typical Boris fashion, there's an expensive Japanese version of this release with different artwork and an extra CD of music entitled "Another Noise." It consists of four tracks clocking in at roughly 24 minutes. The frustrating part is, these four extra tracks are really great, so it's rather unfortunate the international release didn't get them. If you have the means of tracking the Japanese version down, definitely consider getting it.

Not quite what I expected, but Boris always surprises. Very postrockish, ambient, full of energy and power.
