Is this item good at finding shorts circuits ? Thank you

It is an excellent product to use on automotive to find continuity (i.e., there is a closed loop or not). Short circuit is when there is infinite current flowing through the component but zero voltage across. A multi-meter would do this job as well.

The clap needs to be on the neg.

How is it different than a multi tester?

It only displays volts. So it’s a Voltmeter, and a test light.

How would this do testing a motherboard out?

I guess u are asking about a possible circuit board, if theis is the question then I suggest u use a multimeter, for lower electrical needs , yes it says possible for testing out ecm, but I won't take that chance to costly. Now to test on the voltage range it says I would be likely to use it , now if your asking about your boat motor I would think for the voltage range that it's listed on the tester or what the seller recommends, I myself will not use this on a circuit board, if u want to risk it that's your $ , not mine
