Yes, real wasabi - freeze dried so needs to be reconstituted
The reviews for this wasabi are interesting and somewhat inaccurate. To my taste, this is indeed real wasabi. My guess is that people are not allowing time for it to reconstitute with water. Add a little water, let it sit for a while, and THEN taste test it. When I first added water it tasted strange and spinachy to me and not hot at all - what I at first thought was a complete disappointment. Then I read the 5 star reviews and went back to the mix I left in a bowl in the sink. What I found after about 30 minutes was a strong, HOT, flavorful paste! I'll take this over the fake stuff any day.

Not good stuff. Don't buy this product.
The smell of the dry powder is that of matcha (green tea powder). The color when water is added is that of matcha. The taste bears very little pungency but with definite sweetness--kind of like matcha. See where I'm going with this? I would love to test the provenance of this product, but it bears no resemblance to the real wasabi powder I bought in Japan (at Tsukiji market). I would bet that it is something like 95% matcha powder and 5% wasabi. Yeah. I'm calling shenanigans.

It *IS* the real thing, but...
If you've ever grown your own peppers or had an apricot tree, or gardened anything for that matter, you know that not all vegetables, even when from the same garden and/or plant, are "created equal." This is REAL freeze dried wasabi powder, and will certainly render a wasabi for sushi that is far far far superior to that horseradish and green food coloring crap that is served in most sushi bars today! And in my opoinion, I think that freeze drying is an excellent processing choice because it ensures greater freshness texture and flavor than the standard air drying of dehydrated food products. The reason I have only given the product four stars is because it is not quite up to the flavor mark of super premium true freshly grated wasabi. I don't think Masaharu Morimoto would give it a second glance. But for this incredible price, what was I expecting? A fairy god mother? If you like REAL wasabi with your sushi, this is the stuff for you! And the shipping and handling was excellent! Oh, and next time you're whipping up some mashed potatoes, try adding a dash of freeze dried wasabi powder to them. DEEE-licious!

Tasty and sweet with less nostril heat
I really like this Wasabi! I've had the real stuff ground up on shark skin right in front of me so many times that I know real from wannabe Wasabi. I've bought the typical store-bought version of horseradish and mustard plus food coloring version of Wasabi in powder form and hoped that it would be tasty. Big mistake. There were certainly lots of flame thrower heat singing my sensitive sinuses but not even a remote sense of true Wasabi sweetness. Sushi Sonic delivers! Make no mistake. It's NOT hype. It's the real deal, as far as I'm concerned since I cannot afford the real root. If you buy the root then not only is it expense, you have to use it rather quickly because it will get stale fast just sitting in your refrigerator. Wasabi powder can be more cost effective since it will last 10 times longer than fresh. I compared the Wasabi that arrived with my take-out sushi to the Sushi Sonic 100% Real Powdered Wasabi. Note, I like the restaurant's version of Wasabi because it's more mild than the stuff I get from the tube. When the Sushi Sonic Wasabi arrived I made a small batch immediately. That's how much I love Wasabi. I don't care for hot pepper heat at all. It's all heat and whatever flavor it has is derived from garlic, onion or other added spices.100% Wasabi doesn't need any fillers. It provides all the flavor. Its heat can be intense but it's over quite quick. The flavor, however, tends to shimmer on the tongue, exciting the saliva glands. Hint: rather than using water to make the Wasabi paste use ORANGE JUICE. I suggest that you also experiment with other liquids than water. You might find something that really improves the Wasabi experience. Orange and Lemon flavors meld greatly with fish and poultry. Beer, Scotch and Bourbon pair nicely with beef. I've used Wasabi with butter and made amazingly tasty scrambled eggs without adding salt and pepper. Finally, if you love horseradish and mayo on your Prime Rib then you'll love Wasabi and mayo. Trust me, you're just scratching the surface of Wasabi's palatable potential. There are Wasabi recipes yet to be written. Will yours be one of them?

Flavor was lacking
Was not that impressed. It did not have that great of a flavor, kind of flat and weak. Sadly, I can't recommend.

Very Good REAL Wasabi - Highly Recommended
Sushi Sonic "100% Real Powdered Wasabi" is just that, real Japanese Wasabi with no additives. The product description was a little confusing but the bottle states "Ingredients: 100% Wasabi (Wasabia japonica)" and no other ingredients. The 1.5oz (43g) jar contains roughly 17 servings when mixed with water as per the directions. The wasabi is a fine light green power that on its own is fairly mild tasting. It mixes it into a paste fairly easily and does not tend to clump, but don't be lulled into complacence by the complete lack of "heat" immediately after mixing as it will develop a respectable wasabi kick after sitting 10 minutes or so. I really enjoy the flavor and it is more subtle than the normal horseradish based "wasabi" found in tubes and most Sushi restaurants. I think it is worth the extra expense for special occasions, but for everyday use the normal wasabi will do for me. Note that this is a "Product Of China", which might be a concern for some people. Highly Recommended! CFH

Tastes okay but the picture is racially insensitive
It's okay, not the best wasabi powder but good for all but the most discerning. But if you look at the cartoonist picture of the sushi chef on the jar, it's slant eyed asian and the way he's wearing his uniform is how they wrap dead people. There's a reason in martial arts people put the left side of their uniform under the right. It's because for dead people they put the right under the left. The cartoonish picture on this jar is insulting and represents that he's dead or knows nothing about Japanese or Asian culture.
