Simplicity, Economy.
Nifty little printer. Good little printer. Logical, neat, intuitive design. Simple setup. Easy to understand and operate this printer. Fast and very clear printing. Brother's website is excellent. You can learn a lot about this printer right there. This little printer will help to put money in your pocket. Low cost of ownership and operation. C L Smith Okay, now here's an update from me. Today is 20 November 2009. Good little printer, at least mine is a good one. Again, simple and fast. The Brother website adds a lot of value to the machine. Excellent resource for everyday help. In my case, like what are the status lights telling me this time? Or, can you guide me through that paper-jam tutorial again? Because I forget. C L Smith Update #2- 21 January 2010 After 4 1/2 months of using this basic little laser printer. I just now carefully read and re-read what I had typed in the above two parts of this review. Every word of it is still true. You can read the above all you want. Heck, feel free to even read between the lines if you want to. I'm still glad that I bought this little printer. Because it's a good one. C L Smith Update #3- 4 May 2011 I bought this little printer here at Amazon in September of 2009. I at some point used the tape trick on the starter toner cartridge and have been amazed at how long it has lasted me. The starter toner cartridge finally did give out on me today and the printer did quit. I then installed my new cartridge and printed the report that shows you how many pages you've printed. I wanted to see how many pages I eventually printed on that "starter cartridge". (push the big blue lighted button on the front corner of the machine 3 times in quick succession to get that report) I got 1037 pages out of the "starter toner cartridge" that came with the machine new back in September 2009, what - 20 months ago? That toner cartridge was only rated for maybe two or three hundred pages to begin with. But I had taped over that little round window on the end of the cartridge - the tape trick that I read about here in other users' reviews of this printer. Aside from how many pages and how many months the thing printed on the starter cartridge - Aside from all that - I dearly love this little printer. It just works like a charm, no trouble at all. 2 September 2009 to 4 May 2011 - 20 months now - and I'm still very glad that I bought this little machine. C L Smith Update #4- Now it's 23 October 2011. Brother HL-2140 still going strong with no problems whatsoever. Simple to use, easy to use. I now wanted a second Laser Printer so I can just have one loaded with Plain Paper and the other one loaded with Shipping Labels. Well guess what I ordered for a new printer? A Brother HL-2240. The HL-2140 has been such a good little simple trouble-free printer that I saw no logical reason to look elsewhere. Bought it in September 2009 - That's just a bit over two years ago. But I sell on eBay, I ship on eBay, and this machine has been a real workhorse, folks. If the HL-2240 is pretty much the same machine, then I'll be darned glad that I bought it too. C L Smith Update #5- 18 August 2013. Bought this HL-2140 printer here at Amazon on 02 Sep 2009. That's just about 4 yrs of steady use. What a workhorse. I'm an eBay seller, an eBay shipper. I move a fair amount of product. And that means a good bit of printer work. Plus I just like to print stuff in general. I don't worry too much about the cost of printing. Fool that I am, I guess. But this HL-2140 has to be one of the best things I ever bought. Really one good old machine. Charles Smith Maryland

Oh Brother! Laser Printer
For years I have used the inkjet printers. I was fooled by their low cost, and trapped by their high cost of replacement cartridges. I don't print at home as often as I used to, and inkjet cartridges dry up when not in use (in the printer). So, instead of buying the next inkjet cartridge at $30/$50 each, I decided to look into an inexpensive, reliable, dependable, cost-effective black-and-white laser printer. And with the Brother HL2140 I found it! I've used laser printers in the past at work. I'm amazed at how far along the printers have improved. 1) very easy to install (follow the quick setup exactly and it works perfectly) 2) cartridge is easy to install and very affordable 3) quiet and prints FAST (my inkjet is a turtle in comparison) 4) print quality is good 5) very well made I read the Amazon reviews before I purchased it, and that helped make my decision. To the reviewer that included the tip of putting a piece of tape on the cartridge -- thanks. I would write a whole bunch more, but bottomline, if you're looking for an inexpensive laser printer, buy the Brother. UPDATE Wow! Not that anyone's reading this, but 7 years later and I'm still using this printer!!! It's still great! UPDATE 2 We had joy, we had fun, we had printouts all day long. But it jammed on page 2, which made me kinda blue. So, as of October 2020 (actually a few months ago but I’m a sentimental persistent ol’ fool) the HL2140 has finally given up. We had to pull the plug. Literally. The printer kept jamming on the second page of a document. I tried everything but no luck. After finally clearing my print queue on the PC to see if that would help, and discovering that no, I decided to let it go to Printer Heaven. I ran the last printer settings sheet and am amazed total page count reached 30891. I have tried to search what this printer’s lifespan is capable of but only come across drum info. This printer lasted me 11 years. If anyone has one that’s lasted longer, feel free to comment. I’d love to swap war stories with ya! It’s okay, though. I have been using a Canon printer given to me by my employer. I also found a Brother printer HL-2240 at a resale shop about a year ago, on sale for $10. Just yesterday, I found a Brother HL-L2305 for same $ and spent about an hour this afternoon setting it up for wireless (YES!!!) printing. So goodbye ol friend. Thank you so much for your dependable years of service.
