"I Can't Help But Wonder..."
"...How many dolphin lives would have been saved if the line of their jaws turned down instead of up."They're too cute for their own good. These perpetually smiling mammals seem to love living in lifeless, chlorinated tanks. They appear to thrive on performing, on humans clinging to their dorsal fins. Lily Moran, the big-hearted protagonist of Ginny Rorby's fine novel, would like to set you straight.Lily is more mother than sister to her autistic half-brother, Adam. Her own mother has died. Lily and Adam live with her step-father, a caring but distant doctor. When Adam begins Dolphin-Assisted-Therapy, Lily gets a good behind-the-scene look at the "encounter" industry. Thanks to documentaries like Blackfish, adults have a greater understanding of animals in captivity. We know that conditions are deplorable for show mammals, that pups are taken from mothers, that both mourn the separation. How To Speak Dolphin is an important addition to the conversation, and it goes a step further, fairly addressing the notion of Dolphin as therapist. It's a beautifully written, well-paced story of friendship, of patience and understanding. Lily's the thoughtful sort of kid you'd hope to raise. Read How To Speak Dolphin yourself first, then give it to a child. Then talk about it.

A DIFFERENT VIEW OF TEEN READERS WITHIN THEIR FAMILY
Although How TO SPEAK DOLPHIN is designated as children to be the readers, the children’s ages most likely are pre-teens into middle to late teens. The environment for telling the story of caring for people and animals of the oceans involves three young people within two families, each quite different from the other. This is an interesting story for a growing family, teens, with single or double parents, to read this intriguing story. After family members read the book they would gather together for a friendly discussion of what did each family member gain from this naturally caring story for people and animals of the ocean. With so much attention to technology we need to find creative ways for family members to connect with one another and come to a new level of understanding one’s self and family members

one of Ginny's best. Great book for young adult girls
Outstanding, one of Ginny's best. Great book for young adult girls, but even for an old man, I found the story very compelling. Recommend to all readers.

... it does raise her awareness as one of her best friends has a little brother with autism
A little deep for an eight year old however it does raise her awareness as one of her best friends has a little brother with autism, although not at a level as the little boy in the book.It also relates as we took her to swim with dolphins in the keys
