is it good for taking hamsters on planes and cars ,I am moving so I need a good travel carrier.

Yes, I like this case and I bought it to take on the plane but then I found out that is was 75.00 to bring the hamster! Wow! Case is great, my daughter packs her mini hamster around in this all the time. Very durable.

would this be big enough for a single 3 lb holland lop?

I got this for my Holland Lop and she fits in it. There is not a bunch of extra room. But for a quick drive it works just fine.

My pet rat is a classroom pet. He gets taken home on the weekends by various students. Would this be a good weekend home?

If it is a standard rat, that is full grown, I would not suggest this cage for a weekend home. It is a good size for transporting small animals, but would be too small for a rat. By the time bedding, and dishes were put in the cage, there would be very little room for a rat to move around. The cage itself is about the size a roll of papertowels, so it's not actually that big. definitely not, too small for a cat. Also very flimsily made, I had to tape the part where the two pieces connect b/c if you it from the handles it could come apart, do not recommend this product.
