The Circus Came Later
I've seen bits and pieces of the Circus performances several years ago, but not in its entirety until I recently purchased the blu-ray. I have read reasons why the film wasn't released for years. Two of those reasons: the Stones not performing well and the Who upstaging the Stones is HS/BS. Someone even commented that Brian Jones was performing poorly- BS!. There's only one reason why the Circus was kept in the vaults and that has to be because it was Brian Jones last performance. He performed just fine and was having a good time. To see Brian Jones performing and promoting Beggars Banquet songs is something everyone must appreciate. Jones is having a good time and it's very sad what happened to him. To this day there is talk that his passing still has questions. I am not by any means saying that the Stones are only the Stones with Jones. Not that at all. The Stones became legends with or without Jones, but I am saying the Circus needs to be judged in a good way and not just for the sake of Brian Jones R.I.P. but because we get the Stones with Jones as his last performance and we get John Lennon with Yoko and Clapton and we get the Who with Moon and we get Jethro Tull with Tony Iommi which I never even knew until I watched and read about Iommi playing with Tull B.T.W. Mick Abraham had never been video recorded playing with Tull, and we get Taj Mahal with Native American Jesse Ed Davis who played with Harrison at Bangladesh. Marianne Faithful sings nicely. I read that Zeppelin might play the Circus. That would have been awesome had they been included. Including Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention would have been very cool. All in all, we can't judge the R & R Circus with any kind of disdain based on that all the performances are good, music video production was in its early stages and that there aren't many moments captured of Brian Jones w/Stones, John & Yoko performing and backstage, Taj Mahal & Jesse Ed Davis. It's not a crime if you don't see the R & R Circus, but it is a crime to judge it harshly.

Blu-Ray upgrade, but no new material
Absolutely lovely Blu-Ray upgrade, with improved 5.1 sound. No new features or added footage, it’s exactly the same material as the DVD release a decade or so ago.

A re-release and upgrade that is worth replacing your 20 year old discs
This new release of the legendary Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus is only a slight upgrade to the original DVD/CD released in 1995. There is no new footage or commentary beyond the extras provided on the original release. Even the David Dalton essays are repeated. Oddly, the photo gallery from the original DVD is missing from this edition. Because this show was recorded in 1968, there is only so much that modern technology can do to improve the sound and visual quality. The colors on the video are noticeably brighter and cleaner, and the audio is just a bit more cleaner. There is a bonus that this edition provides over the 1995 release. A second CD contains the audio from the bonus performances by Taj Mahal, The Dirty Mac, and Julius Katchen that appear on the Blu-Ray and DVD. And there is never before released audio of The Dirty Mac rehearsing “Revolution” and “Warmup Jam.” Plus the Blu-Ray, DVD, and CDs are all in one package. In 1995, the DVD and CD were available only as separate releases. This is still a 5 star release as it was in 1995, and the upgrades make this more so.

Fascinating Look at Late 60's Swinging London Music Scene
The Rolling Stones, The Who, John Lennon and Eric Clapton: you can smell the weed and see the heroin coursing through the musicians' veins. The spirit of 1968 London pop music is captured in all its multi-colored psychedelic splendor. Some is good (Taj Mahal), some is mannered (Marianne Faithfull), some is pre-recorded (Jethro Tull), some is fascinatingly dreadful (the circus elements). However, The Who and The Stones blow off the roof and take this from a tacky period piece to a timeless rock and roll classic. This belongs in the collection of anyone with serious interest in late 60's rock music or The Rolling Stones in particular.

My goodness, what a time this Blu-ray makes us want to live in. Marianne Faithful has always been beautiful and too talented, but damn it, her voice had me in tears. The opening acts were fantastic, except Yoko doing her "art" or "music". I found myself saying, 'sit down Yoko' a few times. Getting to the Stones though. What do you say? Well they played my faves in there for sure, but an old one I forgot about may have had me choked up a little was "No Expectations", and with the audio being so damned crisp, just hit those heart strings big time. There really is little to say in the negatives on this. Nope... Not finding much. I am sure there will be others who say the sound is too crisp, or that the video is too good, but honestly, it is great to see how good this holds up. I'm sure it will show these youngens what great means. Thanks to the cast of the circus, the people behind the scenes, except that one techie who got a bit too into the music. The people who remastered this to Blu-ray, they need a massive amount of credit for this.
