Wish I'd seen this several years ago...1/4th the price of Coolaroo!
(UPDATE JUNE 2014): I had to update the original review, because this past weekend we had a strong series of storms come through and three VERY large pecan tree branches fell right smack on top of this shade sail! I had it anchored at two points to the house, and at two points to 4 x 4 posts buried 4' deep into the ground, with concrete. One of the 4x4 posts snapped like a twig, but the shade sail didn't even puncture! It bore the weight of the branches fully until we relieved it by cutting away the other 4 x 4 post. No puncture, no tear, no nothing. I don't know what this material is, but it's TOUGH!! Very impressed.Original Review: I had a Coolaroo shade sail I purchased several years ago that I was very happy with, though with some qualifiers as it aged. First the fabric was VERY heavy, and when it rained all the water collected in the middle and caused a pronounced, permanent sag over time. Though it provided a lot of shade, it did have to be cleaned of mildew each year and what finally spelled its demise was a heavy snowstorm in which I ended up out in the snow taking the sail down, it was so weighted with snow the 4x4 posts holding two ends were bowing in, even though they were buried 4' in the ground in concrete! So I was looking for something similar, but of lighter material, and a search for "lightweight shade sail" turned this up. At 1/4th the cost of the Coolaroo, even though it looked to be of similar make, I was a bit skeptical, but for such a small investment, what the heck. The shipment arrived quickly even though it literally came from the other side of the country. Opening it, I would have sworn it WAS a Coolaroo product. The material is essentially identical except that it is of a noticeably lighter weight. That just made putting it up all the easier. The hooks at each corner are clearly built to last and though it comes with no hardware I just reused the hardware from the Coolaroo. It literally took me no more than 5 minutes to hang, including time to tighten the turnbuckles. I ordered a similar size to my old one, but I think this is truer to size, the other was a bit too big and also with the added weight of the fabric it stretched out some over time. This one is so lightweight I really don't see that happening and I was able to get it quite taut. Some reviewers complained this is more yellow than sand. When I first opened it the color was undoubtedly sand, when I took it out into bright sun it seemed a little yellow, but when I got it up, it's clearly sand, as ordered. If I can figure out how to, I'll attach some pictures to this review.Overall, I'm very happy 5 stars without reservation. Well made, it appears very durable and just the ticket for a lightweight sail. Definitely recommend.

I love it - and didn't even know I needed it!
I found this product quite by accident on another website. We had built an outside "catio" for our 6 indoor cats, to give them some outdoor run without having to walk them on their leashes all the time. It was a 24ft l X 8 ft W X 6 ft H in the south of our yard - fully enclosed. We live in the country in NW Ontario, Canada, and summers can be extreme ( although you could not prove it by this one ). The area of the catio is not covered by any natural shade, so we were using tarps to cover the top of catio, and I had planted some half mature silverleaf dogwoods that would also offer some shade to lay under. (The cats would not be in the catio all the time - just when we felt it was time for some fun and exercise) Anyway, I Googled the brand name of the sun shade and then came to the Amazon web site as I always do to check out products due to their great choices, fair pricing and most often free shipping. I found the sun shade sails and started reading reviews. I was intrigued - but it was a review that I read from a woman in Arizona who used these over her Chicken coops and raved about them. I thought that if they worked in the desert for chickens, they would work for me in NW Ont for my cats! However, when I saw the prices, while I thought they were fair, I knew they were more than I wanted to pay for using on the catio. So I put my plan on hold. Within a few days, I received an email advert from Amazon saying Sun Shade Sails were on sale. I went to the web site to look - and to my great surprise, the sale was so awesome that I ordered 2 immediately. Sounds dumb, but they were almost giving them away. I kept thinking there was a catch - but there was not, and FREE SHIPPING! YAY! Take note that you have to buy the hardware separately, which in this case of the sale price, was almost more than the shades, so I did not buy. MY husband bought other hardware at the hardware store for about $10 that tied down both shades. When the sun is shining and you step under the shade, you can feel the temp lower by probably 5 degrees! Awesome! These are purr-fect for the purpose we are using them for. Sturdy, easy to use, and they arrived in 3 days. I can't say enough good about them.

Much better than hoped for
I bought this shade to use on our boat on lake Powell... but before taking it down I used it in a camp in the Sawtooth mountains of Idaho...Before I installed it I added 20 grommets at 2' spacing all around it... however when I installed it I only used the corner D-rings provided... this shade did do some stretching and I had to tighten it up every day for about 4 days ... it went through some 30 mph winds and about a 30 minute downpour form a mountainn thunderstorm... they say this shade will leak but it kept the pick-nick table completely dry during the down pour... it withheld the wind easily and does just a great job of shielding us from the sun in 91 degree temperature...I like it so much that I ordered 3 triangle shades and a larger 18x18 shade. The value is great and the quality is good as well but time will tell how long they last and how they do in the wind of Lake Powell...After seeing it installed my son and his wife ordered several for their home deck and Pool area.Great price for the product outstanding

Works
It's weird. I purchased this 11.5 ft and 18x18 feet one about 3 months ago. 18x18 still is fine. This 11.5 ft one, every side that's holding the D-Ring has ripped. It provides nice shade and feels cooler. After the rip, I didn't feel like sewing, so I made a simple knot at the corner and tied a rope to each knot. Now it's super strong and still works. Rope that came along is ok but I just purchased nicer rope that doesn't unravel and tied aluminum clip for easy removal.Update--------------After year in use 18x18 feet started to rip at one corner and started to spread along the edge and eventually completely ripped while 11.5x11.5 is ok. I'm guessing maybe the tension caused a rip where as by tying corners, 11.5 is still good to go.

Going strong since 2014
We purchased this in 2014 and have used it every spring thru fall since. I have always taken it down in the winter. We live in SE Ohio. It has aged well; some green algae (?) on it and topside has faded, but otherwise solid. I realized this year when I searched to buy a second one to expand the shade in our backyard how long we have had it. I rig it with heavy duty springs (think big spring on top of old style screen door) on the two poles in the yard and the other side tied to house with rope. This provides some give in the wind and I believe helps with durability of the shade, although it does sag some. The cost has gone up by $10 since 2014 but if it lasts as long as this one, it's worth the money.

This was actually rectangle
Don't know how they got the measurements but this isn't a square. It did do the job I needed it for which was to protect the side of house from the morning sun. It seems like it is well made and went through summer with strong winds (I attached it with the cords included and snap carabiners) and it didn't stretch or tear. I didn't pull it as tight as I have seen them however so that might be why it made it through the winds. It didn't mold either. I did notice it never did lose the creases from being folded for packaging which I thought odd and Ihe color was an ugly dirty straw hue and very unappealing...would have been nice if it were either more yellow or even just tan. Better price then any of the others I saw for the size.

Sunlinght in PR is pretty hard and dangerous over long exposures
Sunlinght in PR is pretty hard and dangerous over long exposures, so we bought this shade to be able to use our pool in the mornings, when there is not any shade (we do get some in the afternoons). The material is very tough and it looks good. It has heavy duty hardware in the corners to make it easy to attach to poles, or to the surrounding area using snap hooks we bought in the local hardware store. It blocks most of the sunlight, but still some comes through. I wish it was none, but I was expecting this as the advertisement is truthful. We are very happy with it and recommend it as long as you don't expect a 100% blocking of the sunrays.

Not what I expected
It is ok, it does the job, however the product information said that it was sand in color, its yellow. It is called a sun shade sail, its not made of sail cloth but a woven material. Again, not what I expected. The onlyl reason why I kept it b'c I used expidited shipping to get it to me, which they did not specify to add 2 days after I received the email that it shipped to the amount of shipping days. I paid extra for the expidited shipping which was more than the cost of the shade and was definitely not going to pay more to ship it back to them. After going back and forth with the company many times, they didn't even offer an apology for the misrepresentation. I would never use the company again. They were rude, cold and never made me, the customer, feel as I was important to the success of their business.
