it comes with a master link, but you will need a chain tool to adjust the length

What size should I use for a standard beach cruiser, 1/8 or 1/2 x 1/8?

1/2 is the length of each link for almost every bike out there... And for a beach cruiser 1/8 is the width and is just perfect for your ride.When you get into those 8,9,10 speed bikes, the width of the chain is narrower to fit in between the cogs.

can this fit on a 24" single speed bmx bike

It might, I used it on a 20" one speed bike. If the gears/sprockets are close to the same as a twenty in sprockets/gears then yes.
