For a beginner or child, yes it is good. However, when it breaks or wears out it will likely not be fixable. At that point, you would want a better quality clarinet anyway. Also, I know a clarinet player who just likes having a red clarinet for fun. Professional players will say these are junk, and that may be true, but they are not meant to be played by professionals.

Q: just out of curiosity my daughter is in band and she is in 6th grade i was wondering could i get her pink or should i get her black?

Since your daughter is a sixth grader (believe me it's a big deal) it matters what the other students in band that play clarinet have. Pink is cool but after my sixth grade daughter started she wished she would have picked the dark green or royal blue. Still tho being original is always better.

Q: Would this work for a large second grader to learn on?

I believe so. My daughter is in 7th grade and learning to play the clarinet. So far she loves it and this particular set comes with everythg you need.

Q: Is this clarinet good for a 8 year old?

Yes its excellent for an 8 year old. I bought it for my daughter and although she was 11 she was also a beginner. Her band teacher said it was perfect. So yes its good for an 8 year old.
