This book is fantastic! I couldn’t have imagined that the psalms were this amazing

Walter Brueggemann adds depth to the message of the Psalms. These 2000 year old (plus) prayer songs of the people of Israel through Brueggemann's writing come into today's perspective and add depth and meaning to the joys and trials of our day. They bring about a sense of God's presence among us in the good times, in the awful times and in the surprise times when things turn out totally differently than expected, but never in a return to the status quo. Not an easy read, but one that should be taken on with a Revised Standard Version of the Psalms.Dennis Keller

Well written, scholarly and useful . Gives an easy basic understanding of the psalms. Buy 2nd hand...not a book I really want to keep.

Excellent Biblical truths, well explained with historical and Biblical background gives the reader reasons for the Psalm and why it was written. Brueggemann is arguably the most prolific and most respected prophet of our century. Having written about 150 theological books based on the Bible, we are gifted with someone who can bring us to God's grace and glory!

Wonderful rich bookIt finds ways to "categorize" the Psalms in a way that makes amazing senseand brings new depth and understanding to anyone's exploration of this bookThe author is able to make the Psalms come aliveand helps people negotiate the sometimes wildly different tone of various PsalmI bought this book years ago, and just repurchased it, after my original version fell apart!

This book is a tour de force. Anyone who wants to start a deeper understanding of the Psalms should read this book. And it's not just understanding that this book provides; it's a way of using the Psalms to encourage and counsel other Christians.

The contents of this volume are profound.The quality of Augsburg’s physical book are of very low quality. I cannot highlight any passage without the color bleeding through to the back side of the same page—a really unique experience of exceptionally low quality paper, and there’s at least one place on page 30 where not all of the words are printed. Really?! This is a uniquely inferior quality printing job. I should be careful about ever buying a book from Augsburg Publishing House again.

A thought provoking analysis of the spirituality of the Psalms. By analyzing numerous Psalms through the catagories of Orientation, Disorientation, and New Orientation, Brueggemann opens the message of the Psalms to speak a fresh word to a generation that have not gererally known what to do with God when life is unfair.I have been praying the Psalms regularly since challeneged by Peterson (Answering God) to do so. Brueggemann has helped to deepen my prayers by giving me a greater understanding of the Psalmists and why they wrote the prayers they did.
