HUNTER Garrett ACE 250 Metal Detector Treasure Pack

This is my first metal detector, so be advised that I do not have anything to compare the Ace 250 to. I bought it based on other people's reviews. This took very little time for the simple setup. My 8 year old and I watched the video then went outdoors. Amazingly, she could immediately pick up what the different tones meant just from listening to the video once. It was working accurately and at first we did not care what we found....nails, screws, bottle caps, it really didn't matter. Once we got a little pickier it became a little tougher to decipher if the tones were accurate. Someone on a prior review stated it takes 100 hours of use to really understand the sound, and I think they are probably right. Depending on the depth and position of the metal object, often it would make a tone and signal that it was something more than a piece of tin foil or pop-top, but once we started digging, the tone would change. We used it for about 3-4 hours on the beach and started to understand the less significant changes in the sound, the sensitivity, and tone changes when going over the same ground. It was everything we expected, although I believe we need to spend a lot more time on it to become more familiar with its capabilities. It is light and easy to carry and did not get cumbersome in the 3-4 hours of use. I would definitely recommend this to someone just starting out to see if they enjoy the hobby. Great product. The book and DVD say you need many hours of practice with this to become good and I believe it. The DVD that came with this unit can be watched free on Garrett's website. If that's the only reason to get this kit, then I suggest going there to save some money. A few times out, I did find some old metal items from old house sites that were cool. There are no black or white alerts. Sometimes on the same spot it will alerts as coins, relics and tin. When there were large metal items close to the surface the detector freaked out and alerted as all types. I guess the return was overwhelming. The unit assembles and disassembles quickly. I store it in the original box. The shovel it comes with is plastic, but well built. The treasure bag has pockets to sort your finds. I didn't use the headphones. I could see these being handy in public places as to not annoy people as the alerts are loud and the volume is not adjustable.

Ok, the detector is very cool, I love all the indicators.. but the silly trowel they included broke the VERY FIRST TIME we used it. I guess Texas black clay had it's way with it. SNAP! Too bad. Otherwise, this seems to be a very nice detector package. I love how you can set the sensitivity for depth or material. Very nice. We used it indoors the other day to find the back of my daughter's earring which was wrapped up in her bed sheets! Worked like a charm!

Garrett usually puts out a good product. Got back into detecting after 15 years. This particular machine is a pain in the rear end. If it worked as it should it would be perfect. Not sure if I got a lemon but after 5 months of trying to become "one" with this thing here is my assessment.1/ Pinpoint is ridiculous. After pinpoint for the perfect read at a depth of 4", dug a hole which ended up being 10' in diameter and 8' deep before I found an iron nail where the meter said it was a coin.2/ Scanning I find several different hits in a 2 foot square area. Try another angle for pinpointing and every hit disappeared?? Went back to original position and again, all hits disappeared??3/ I've hunted before and not new to this. Batteries are new and show full, wire connections appear secure, all I can conclude is, "this is crap"!!

Its a good starter detector. Quality is good. I think a pointer should come with it.

I bought this for my 13 yr old son who has gotten into metal detecting latley. He loves the features and the varying tones. After watching the training video a couple of times (don't skip watching this video) he understood the tones and their meanings and was able to go out that afternoon and have good success finding some quarters, dimes, and pennies at a local park. He was thrilled. This seems to be a very good detector. My only small complaint is I wish the display screen were larger but it is very well laid out so I wouldn't let that stop me from purchasing.

order arrived in good condition and on time. Assembly was straight forward, since i am a beginner at metal detecting. i have nothing to compare it too. also cold and snowy weather has not let me use it, so i do not know how well it works. i have detected some coins on the floor and that appeared to work well.
