3D Granny Squares: 100 crochet patterns for pop-up granny squares

I read the other reviews and they all referred to the paper version of the book being very difficult to read. Not so with the Kindle edition! Beautiful pictures, in focus, that can be enlarged; diagrams that include color that can also be enlarged, and, of course, you set your own text size on your own device! Very, very easy to read! There are no in-process pictures of the blocks, so you either need to be able to read diagrams or abbreviations for crochet patterns or a combination of the 2. There are guides to both ways at the beginning of the book. Great layout in that the projects for each block or sets of blocks immediately follow those patterns, so there's very minimal jumping around the text. And the projects are very cute. Also, all of the food blocks are together, all of the animal blocks together, etc., which is very handy. The patterns are great, and the finished blocks are square at 90° and lay flat on the table, with the 3D parts sticking up, just like they should -- no adjustments needed! The patterns are well thought out and original.

This is a great book. Not only are there pictures of each finished block in color, but the patterns are clearly stated along with chart symbols. So you can read the line by line instructions or look at the chart symbols if you’re more experienced. There is also a basic crochet chart in the back to show you the stitches they mention throughout the book. No fancy stitches, just the basics. Reviews that the print was too smal-I understand some people may see it as that, but I had no issues reading/seeing the words. I’m 50 and wear glasses and have no issues reading every line. Plenty of adorable blocks to choose from and mix/match! Definitely worth the purchase price.

Patterns go from easy to difficult and will be enjoyed by the novice or expert crochet artist. Full glossary, stitch how-tos and comprehensive patterns both written and diagrammed will give you some fab ideas about things to create.

So I’m basically a beginner. I knew how to do chain stitching, magic loop, and a double crochet before I got this book. Couldn’t read a pattern. This book has a helpful section in the front for how to read patterns, both diagram and text, and some info about all the stitches used in the book in the back. I still haven’t used all the stitches but so far I’ve learned how to do single crochet, half double, treble, and about how to do front or back loops of a stitch from this book. The font is small, probably like 8pt, I am 28 without reading glasses so I had no trouble reading, however I could see how you may have trouble reading the small print if you need reading glasses. These granny squares are HUGE. I have made granny squares before and they have always been like 4 rounds. These are like between 9-11 rounds! I think these are better for blankets and pillows. I wanted to make a patchwork cardigan. So as I get better at crochet I’m probably going to modify these patterns myself to be smaller and better fit on like a cardigan. Also, unfortunately there’s errors in the book. Mostly in the text. Like I was making the pie one, and it said I should end up with 68 stitches around the pie itself, but I counted and followed the pattern and somehow I only had 54. Luckily, with some simple math I was able to just scale down and it turned out just fine. But it’s a little frustrating frogging what I just spent like half an hour doing because the book isn’t right… Overall, I still recommend this book for $14. The patterns are so cute, it’s great practice, I just follow the diagrams more than the text bc that seems to be more accurate. There is varying degrees of difficulty in these patterns. Beginners just start with the basic ones like the pizza, apple, and scale up to the more difficult ones.

Very creative granny squares in this book. (Definitely not your traditional granny square). Pictures are great and pattern instructions are easy to follow. I highly recommend this book if you want to take your granny squares to the next level or bring them into the 21st century. For me, I saw a lot of room to combine patterns or change a few stitches to add my own unique style or flair to them.

So many bad reviews stating that the print is too small, “unreadable, how did this make it through editing.” It’s not that bad and definitely worth getting the book. Yes, the print is small, but if it wasn’t, you’d be reading patterns that were pages long. There’s a lot of info packed in here and they’ve formatted it this way so each pattern fits in a single page. If you know how to read a crochet pattern and can read smaller print, you’ll get through this just fine. The book is laid out very tidily and the patterns are adorable. Go for it.
