Great Little Electric Thatcher
Initially, I was hesitant to order this product. Most of the reviews were positive so I took the plunge and completed the purchase. The thatcher arrived on time, well packaged, all the necessary parts were present with a package of replacement tines, no damaged parts, and a set of plain - simple - easy to follow assembly instructions with pictures. I am not a "mechanical genius" and have learned over the years to read the instructions several times, study the pictures, lay out the pieces, and then take it slow and steady. Some may be able to complete the assembly in a matter of 5-10 minutes, I took my time and had it assembled and operational in about 20-30 minutes. My yard is about 4000sq feet and I used to thatch the lawn once a year using a thatching rake, it would take several weekends for me to complete the process as I would go over the lawn two or three times. In past years I was lazy and occasionally hired a landscaper to come in and power rake the yard. I ended up replacing sections of the turf/sod after it was torn up by the power rake. The instructions recommend setting the tines at the highest level and then adjusting as needed. There are three settings, and it is fairly easy to set the height of the tines by using the switches located on the wheel hubs. I used the highest setting and was satisfied with the results and did not notice any damage to the turf/sod. The instructions clearly state "do not operate" on a wet lawn. Operating the machine on a wet lawn will result in damage to the lawn, and could cause damage to the machine. Do not risk tearing up pieces of the turf and sod because you are in a hurry and cannot wait for the lawn to dry out. Using this electric thatcher was fairly simple. I started in the backyard, moving slowly to get used to how the machine operated and traveled. It took about 45 minutes to complete the backyard, and an additional 30 minutes for the front yard. Seriously, it took longer to rake up the piles of dead grass than it took to thatch the front and back yard, and I ended up with thirteen 30-gallon bags of dead grass. I fertilized the lawn, watered it, and the outcome is fantastic. It is a lightweight machine, lighter than a gas powered push mower. It is easy to operate, press the power button hold down the handle bar and walk slowly behind the machine. I would say it is self propelled, but it is the action of the tines grabbing and pulling up the dead grass that propels the machine forward - so hold on to the handle, it could get away from you if you are not careful. Remember - let go of the handle and the machine stops instantly. Maneuverability does take a little getting used to and I quickly figured out to work in straight lines, do not turn the machine while it is operating. When reaching the edge of the lawn let go of the handle, stop the machine, and then position it for the next row. The dead grass is pushed out of the back of the machine and there were no issues with the dead grass piling up inside the machine and causing stalling or stoppage. As the machine is electric there is the issue of the power cord getting in the way of the machine. Under no circumstances should you operate the thatcher and run over the power cord. It is something that you will get used to, it is not a major issue and you will quickly figure out a procedure that works for you. If you have a large number of trees, bushes, shrubs, in your lawn you will have to maneuver around these obstacles with the cord, again it is something that can be figured out fairly quickly. I would recommend purchasing a durable, heavy gauge, 100foot, extension cord. I would not recommend this machine for a large lawn or area, a simple average residential lawn between 2,500 and 5,000sq feet is perfect for this machine. This recommendation is based upon the 14-inch wide path of the thatcher versus a 20-24" path for the average push mower. It would just take much longer to complete the larger area and could cause unnecessary stress and overheating for the machine.

Worked really well on my 1/4 acre lot!
This thing is extremely light, assembles in minutes, and does a pretty darn good job! I've been dethatching my lawn for years with commercial grade rentals from the local hardware store. Usually I would rent a machine for a couple hours to do my 1/4 acre lot and that would cost me around $50-60 each time. I didn't think that price was unreasonable so I kept doing it for years. I found the Greenworks 10 amp electric model the other day for $90 and I thought what the heck give it a try! I'm glad I did! This was my first experience using an electric dethatcher so I wasn't sure how it would compare to a commercial gas powered one. At first I struggled a bit trying to keep the cord out of my path but that was to be expected. Once I figured out a system I was dethatching pretty efficiently. I will be the first to say I really should've cut my grass first to help with the whole operation but I was in a time crunch as it just arrived yesterday and there was rain in the forecast. With all that being said this dethatcher did a really good job(on the highest setting) of removing the thatch while leaving the good grass in place. After reading some of the reviews on here I was really careful not to pull the dethatcher backwards while it was running. Because it is super light it is easy enough to tip up and turn to go the opposite direction you came from. I really wish I would've stopped to take some pictures because this machine did pull up a significant amount of thatch. For my 1/4 acre lot I filled up my full size truck bed plus a couple more big lawn bags. Some asked if this is self-propelled and it is NOT but with the rotating tines you don't really need to push it either! It really is just a matter of guiding it along your path and making sure you are going at a slow steady speed to get all the thatch. Pros: Lightweight, pulls thatch without harming good grass, inexpensive, very easy to operate Cons: It is corded so that is a bit of a pain, Only 14 inch dethatching path

It works well, but needs some QC on the packaging
Like many others, mine too was short some hardware. It was missing one of the screws to attach the handle to the unit. No big deal, just had to rummage through the miscellaneous screw bucket till I found one close enough. But with so many people reporting missing hardware, it seems like a quality control problem with the packaging. Also, I don't know if mine was assembled wrong or if the directions are wrong, or if its just confusing labeling, but when you turn the knobs to the way the instructions say should be "highest", it is really the lowest, and vice versa. Not a huge deal, but puzzling. Speaking of directions, they aren't so great either. The only parts they listed a quantity on were the screws, and one of those were missing. Some of the included parts weren't even listed or mentioned in assembly instructions. Luckily its not too complicated to figure out even with no instructions at all. Ok, so everything so far is trivial, but enough to ding them one star. It would cost almost nothing for them to fix these issues and make people feel like they were getting something that was packaged with care. On to performance: Yes, it works! And quite well at that. I used it in my ~5000sf lawn which has not been dethached ever in the 5 seasons since it was installed. In some areas it pulled up amazing quantities of dead grass, in others, just moderate amounts. I overlapped each pass by 1/2 of the machine width and that worked well. Very little green in the loose clippings and no damage to the roots unless I let it sit in one place too long. After making a pass, it's pretty easy to rake the loose grass and bag it. What would normally been probably two days of back breaking work became about 4 hours of relatively easy (and somewhat fun) effort that even my 7 year old daughter could help with. I used a 100' 12ga extension cord and had no problems with overheating or tripping the breaker. I did tend to do smaller areas then stop to rake periodically though. The motor would bog a little in some of the thicker sections, but it didn't sound like it was terribly overworked. A casual inspection at the end didn't reveal any broken tines, and it came with a bag of spares, so no problems there. Overall I think it was a great investment. It will pay for itself by the 3rd season vs renting a power rake, and it doesn't seem worse for wear after the first one so I don't think it will have any trouble lasting at least that long. I recommend it!

Greenworks 10 Amp 14” Corded Electric Dethatcher (Stainless Steel Tines)
Hey fellow lawn lovers! If you’re anything like me and dread the thought of manually raking your yard, boy, do I have a game-changer for you! The Greenworks 10 Amp 14" Corded Electric Dethatcher, deserving of a full 5-star rating! This machine is a beast. It works tirelessly, tearing through thatch like a hot knife through butter. The stainless-steel tines are tough and durable, ensuring you won't be replacing them anytime soon. It's an amazing alternative to raking, especially if you don’t use a clipping catcher on your mower. I love the compact design too, it's easy to maneuver around the yard, and it doesn't take up much space in the garage. It’s lightweight, and the corded design ensures consistent power without worrying about a battery dying mid-job. The value for money is fantastic. For what it does, the price is a steal. No more back-breaking raking, and a healthier lawn to boot? Yes, please! All in all, I couldn't be happier with this dethatcher. It’s made lawn care a breeze and saved me a ton of time. If you want a beautiful, thatch-free lawn without the backache, this Greenworks Dethatcher is the way to go. 5 stars all the way!

This product WORKS and WORKS WELL.
This has to be the best and most effective piece of lawn equipment. I read many reviews of this and a competitor product. I have another Greenworks product (chainsaw on a stick) and their customer service has been excellent and very pleasant. Took the plunge on this. A fairly lightweight box arrived quickly. Opened it up and my immediate reaction was that it looked like a child's lawnmower. I put it together in a matter of minutes. It was pretty intuitive, and instructions were included just in case. My inherited 1/2 acre lawn had not been well-maintained by previous owners. Weeds, uneven and bumpy, stones and very hard-packed. I wasn't optimistic. First pass across stunned me - pulled up so much thatch. Woo Hoo. Kept going and it was actually exciting to see how effective this little gizmo is. I don't think the optional bagger would help due to small size. Raking is a manual effort that goes with the activity. Good exercise imo. This released bags of thatch and pulled up moss that was trying to set foot. The last picture is unraked. My neighbor borrowed it after having manually thatched her lawn. I watched her re-do with this. Unbelievable! She has a nice flat grassy lawn that is annually maintained by a service. The results were amazing. She did her back yard and thanked me for saving her life. Another neighbor down the street borrowed it (the one who turned me on to Greenworks chainsaw). They, too, had amazing results. If people complain about rocks and stones (I never had any flying around or breaking tines), think about walking the lawn and picking them up. They can't be good for a lawnmower either. Common sense needed. This little gizmo has now down over 2 acres of lawn. No broken tines, no problems. Great product!!!! Greenworks you saved my back and hours and hours of raking that I never would have finished before giving up.

In a word FANTASTIC
Renting a dethatcher or "power rake" can cost around $50 for 4 hours or $75 for 24 hours. In addition, they might make you provide a deposit of around $150. For around $100 you could buy this, and if you need a dethatcher, and if you have a lawn YOU NEED A DETHATCHER, then you should buy this. You will not be disappointed. This dethatcher is an incredible value. I could go on and on about it but there are so many great reviews there is no point repeating the positives. I will just say that the good reviews are right. This is an awesome, easy to use and inexpensive power rake. PROs: *Assembly* was VERY simple. Just a few steps and you are good to go. *Weight* -- Light. I thought that the light weight would be a negative for this but the dethatcher digs right in and gets the thatch up no problem. It being light is great, you can carry it around and hang it in your shed. *Quiet* *Easy to adjust* The wheel hubs have a simple three way height adjustment. Simple. *ELECTRIC* At first I thought being a plug in electric would be a strike against it, but in fact I am sold on it. Being electric, it is lighter, quieter and there is no fussing with fuel, or mixing fuel, carburetors, etc etc. The cord can get in the way, but big deal, it didn't slow me down a bit. *Easy to use* The dethatcher kind of drives itself gently forward at just the right speed. You barely have to push at all. A child could use it. *Comes with full set of replacement Tines* Unbelievable, a great product and they even threw in these? So cool. *4 YEAR WARRANTY* Wait, WHAT?! Who does a 4 year warranty anymore? I'll tell you who, someone who knows their product will LAST. THINK OF IT, if you were to dethatch twice a year it would cost you at least $100, not counting the time, effort and mess of transporting it. This Dethatcher practically PAYS FOR ITSELF the first time you use it!!! With 4 years of warranty you are going to save over $400 over 4 years and even better your lawn will be much more healthy. Cons? None. Nope For what this is and what it does it is PERFECT. At the price it is AMAZING. In summary, BUY THIS, YOU WON'T REGRET IT. This saves so much time and effort, gets all the leaves acorns and of course thatch out of the lawn so your grass can drink and eat like a king. And you will save so much time raking you can concentrate on other things. You push a button, grip the safety bar and you are on your way to a better lawn. I usually only write reviews when I hate something or I love something. I am writing this review because I am so happy I bought this… I love this dethatcher. I really do. TIPS I was thinking I was going to have to buy a 14 gauge extension cord at least for this. But before buying anything I tried it with my 16 gauge 100' extension cord. I did not have any problems. The cable did not get warm, I did not blow any breakers, no problem. I think the manual said 14 gauge, so I cannot recommend 16 gauge, but I am saying it worked fine for me. :) If you have a leaf blower use it instead of a rake to remove the thatch and debris that this pulls up. Makes this whole job so easy it was actually fun. This can clearly also be used to prepare ground for seeding. Well, I guess that is all I got for now. It works great, is easy and even fun to use, cost a mere $100 (give or take) (ships free with PRIME!) and has a generous 4 year warranty.....What are you waiting for???? Attack that THATCH!!!

Works wonders for my bermuda grass lawn
Living in the desert, I don't have a large lawn. It's about 20' x 25', and I grow bermuda in the summer and rye in the winter (and sometimes now grow fescue in the summer instead). After about five or six years of great lawns, my bermuda grass lawn started struggling. Turns out, it was thatch - and lots of it. Aeration helped at first, but it really needed to be dethatched. The first time that I did it, I dug the whole lawn up by hand and it took me two days (but that was to remove the plastic mesh that covered the whole area from when the previous owner put down sod, and I didn't want a machine like this to spread plastic all over the place). I mention doing it by hand to put the time frame into perspective. This machine...oh, baby. In about ten minutes, it dethatches my entire lawn. I've run it over my lawn when it was mostly bare dirt, and I've run it over grass before overseeding. It has worked great in both conditions. When there's grass on the lawn, it doesn't chew up the living grass and leave it bare. It digs up some of it, but most of it is still there. I was surprised and happy that it came with a second set of tines, but it turns out that I haven't needed them. I've used mine several times over the past ~2 years, and the first set of tines is still holding up great for me. I love that it's electric, and it's not very loud. The cord is a bit cumbersome to keep moving, but it isn't too bad. A battery powered version would just weigh and cost more, so I live with it. The handle folds in half for storage, which is convenient. Sure, it's one more thing to keep in the garage/shed/wherever, but it has worked great for me. I paid just over $130 for it in early 2012, and I think it's been worth every penny. It costs even less now. I highly recommend it.

My favorite new tool! Surprisingly effective!!!
An excellent Dethatcher, surprisingly effective for its size. I was at first a bit skeptical but then the Amzn reviews encouraged me to give it a try, I don't regret it a bit! Renting a dethatcher from HD will cost you $75, you have to pick it up, transport it and return it. I also had some unpleasant surprises with tool rentals: broken or not properly working = second trip. Secondly, I am lucky enough to have a smart neighbor: We share tools and bought this one together, hence the cost was a no brainer. Does it work? ABSO-LU-TELY!!! It does a great job, does not damage or chop the grass like some others, it's easy to push and the tines seems to resist use fairly well. - Update: after about 40,000 sqf of dethatching, the tines are in a much better shape that I would have imagined, see picture below. DO'S and DON'T * Don't pull back, only go forward * Remove rocks and branches * Don't use a tiny weeny extension cord, proper gauge is required. If you use 2 extension cord, place the smaller gauge (bigger cord) first. i.e. 12 on the outlet then 14 to the machine. * Cut and bag the clippings before dethaching: Overgrown grass doesn't help. * if you have the energy, will and time, use a 90 deg. criss-cross pattern: you'll be surprised how effective it is. * Don't apply a pre-emergent crabgrass control fertilizer before you dethach, *after* only. CHANGING THE TINES In order to change the tines, you'll need - 8mm socket, - Phillips Screwdriver (Cordless Drill recommended ;-) - Flat head screwdriver - Small mallet or hammer *be careful, the screws are not of the highest quality* if you need to change some of them, they are M5 X 22 or M5 X 25 22 being the length under the head. 1) Remove the screw(s) 2) Tap gently with a mallet to crack open the tine cartridge 3) With a flathead screwdriver, pry open until you can see the pin, **don't remove the tine cartridge out of the housing** 4) push out the pin and remove the tine 5) put a new tine in place 6) put the tine cartridge back in place, tap gently with a mallet

I just can't recommend this enough
I bought this for about just under $100 5 years ago, was still working like a champ before I had to let it go because I had to move to a condo. Seriously, compared to other expensive cordless gears that I had, this stood out as a reliable, durable and quality piece given the affordable price I paid for it. I did see the cordless version of this came out not long after I bought but as it worked so well I never even considered to buy that one. Loved it every bit

Pleasantly surprised at this little workhorse
I have a very large yard and can no longer do the heavy raking of the thatch in the spring. I was sceptical about buying this but thought if I got two years out of it that would be about the same cost as hiring the job out. Starting in the front I was amazed at how well it worked on the first pass, easily pulling a lot of dead grass. For interest sake, after raking that up I did a second pass and it pulled even more. I did the whole yard in about an hour and the machine did not heat up at all. It comes with extra tines, which is appreciated. As noted by others there is a small trick to putting it together, though in reality it goes together easily, and if you are thoughtful you will be plugging it in in about 15 minutes. Now it sits for year, though it is small and doesn’t take up much space. It is light enough to hang on a the wall or from a ceiling. It is one of the purchases I have made recently that allows me to keep doing my own yard work. I give it a 5 star rating, but will adjust if it doesn’t make a second year. Oh and the condition of my lawn has improved significantly as water and fertilizer can now do there job better.

Great value, easy to assemble and does a very good job.
For years, I have had to remove my lawnmower blade and replace it every spring with a thatching blade from which I received mixed results. This small and inexpensive Thatcher is far more convenient and does a better job than my thatching blade. It did an excellent job of removing all the dead grass without any damage to the soil. It is already been borrowed by my neighbor. A nice feature is that it it basically pulls itself by design, even though it is not a self propelled unit. The only suggestion I have is that there could be pilot holes for when you have to screw the handle into the machine. As it exists right now, you drill straight into the plastic housing. Problems may occur when attaching the handle if you do not drill straight. To be clear, this unit is not for heavy duty operations. However, for the average urban homeowner who enjoys a nice lawn this is a great product.

Paid for Itself the First Time!
Used it twice now. It rakes up the thatch without destroying the grass! I really thought it would rip up the exisitng grass and we'd have a bald lawn but it didn't. Sure it does take up some green grass but thats to be expected. Just make sure your lawn is 2" or lower in height as you will have less green grass pulled up and more thatch. We just ran over it with a bagger lawn mower to pick up the thatch. This has saved a great deal of phsycally wrenching raking for hours. Done in about 12 mins. We don't have a big front lawn, but what a difference it has made! Awesome little machine and not heavy or combersome. Highly recommend.
