I really cannot understand those who expect to work steel on a 9 pound anvil. I have worked steel in the past, and you need a real, large, heavy anvil for that sort of work. The finish on this anvil is exactly fine for hobby work. What does that mean? It means if you want to work silver, copper, even brass, it's exactly what you need for those small projects. Need to work with leather and set some rivets? Perfection! The top is flat, the horn is rounded as it should be! You don't pay $16 for smithy anvil! This is exactly what it purports to be - a HOBBY anvil. Perfectly sized for tabletop use, not too heavy, yet substantial enough to work those small projects. The only drawback is the square hole for anvil tools is only square near the top. they really do need to work on squaring it all the way through. Another reviewer noted this and it is still the case. Sure, you get what you pay for - and in this case I wanted a small, hobby anvil for leatherwork and small brasswork - guess what - I got exactly what I wanted and needed.

Perfect for small metalworking projects and jewelry making. The weight is just right for stability, and the surface is smooth and well-finished. It absorbs hammer blows effectively without bouncing. It took me a while to come up with reasons to rate this, mostly because my need for one is pretty rare. But I finally used it and have mixed feelings. For those who say it's great as long as you put a more hardened steel plate on it, that's not great. It means it failed to live up to your needs. In my case, it's living up to my modest needs, but it's taking a beating. The fact is, this is definitely not hardened, so using any hard metal on it WILL damage the surface. I used it as a mass off-set for leather punching, and had to use a wood block on top because I kept denting the steel on the top. Hit it with a hammer and it will dent. It can't be used for forging anything and really only works for shaping light metals (or as a mass point) with a soft hammer (assuming damaging it is something you want to avoid). It's simply cast iron with a machined top, and anything harder will dent it. I gave it three stars instead of two because it meets (but doesn't in any way exceed) all of my needs. If your needs are modest, it may serve you well. If not, it makes a great door-stop. Otherwise, I'd avoid it if I were you.

Really there isn't much that should go wrong with it (hopefully). As longs it gets delivered and doesn't break the 1st time using it should be ok. So, seems fine so far

This has been very useful for me. As I work with small pieces (jewellery) at the moment, this is great. Flat surface for banging and horn for shaping. Make sure this is the size you want and enjoy using it.
