This is a great water fan!
I bought a fan exactly like this one 7 or 8 years ago. It's time to replace it and I wanted another one just like it. That's how much I believe in this product. I live in the hot, humid South, so my fan is really put to the test. This fan is easy to use, just put water into the tank at the bottom of the unit and choose your settings. Once a week I remove the top part, empty the water tank and let it rest for at least 6 hours then it's ready to go again. I run my fan more than 6 months a year for 24 hours a day on high speed in serious heat and humidity and the tank of water lasts approximately 8 hours. A light blinks to let you know that it needs more water. You can either take the top off the unit- it is very simple- to fill the tank, or use the drawer in the back of the unit to add water. The fan will continue to blow air after the water runs out, but it doesn't have the cooling ability without the water. This is a great feature because where I live, getting air to circulate is important. This water fan really does cool the air, but it is not an air conditioner. It does not take the place of an a/c, but if you don't actually need a real a/c or if you need some cool air in a certain location, this could be the perfect choice for you. It is somewhat large, but it is not heavy at all (until the tank is filled with water). It is not super quiet, but it's not super loud either. I have it in the bedroom and it does not disturb my sleep in any way. Having a remote control is really convenient, too. I think this is a fantastic machine and I am truly amazed that it has such a long lifespan considering the conditions that it operates under. It far and away overperformed and outlived my expectations!

Best...Purchase...EVER!!!
Attention!!! Needs to be cleaned at least once per month! I use this everyday for at least 5 hours. When you start to get a funny smell I drain, add distilled white vinegar and wash the media once per month. I do this in the bathtub and it is easy to clean. Just allow time for parts to fully dry. I put the media (filter) outside in the sun to "deodorize" to avoid odor. I use dish soap to clean filters. When you do this it avoids a "smell". This was waiting for me when I got home and I must say that this is one of the smartest purchases I've ever done! It works great and keeps my room cool! I followed the directions and added ice and this blows air (with ice) at 64 degrees! Without the ice it still blew around 70 degrees! My AC unit did not turn on the entire time I had this running. Definitely a money saver on my electric bill! I had the ceiling fans running and place this in my living room allowing the air to be evenly distributed throughout my home. Also, the fan is VERY strong! In other words, I run it only on low. The fan really puts out a TON of air! I tried medium and high for fun and it really moves the air. The sleep mode seems to run the fan on medium which is a little strong for me. It is not near as noisy as I anticipated and you get used to the sound very quickly. It isn't so much as a fan humming sound as it is hearing the airflow move. The pictures I included are the unit running solely on room temperature distilled water with no ice. I believe the pictures speak for themselves on how well this unit works. It is a little water "hungry" but I did buy the 53 pint unit. It takes almost 6 gallons of water to fill but the water doesn't need changing for at least a week depending on where you use it. It has a water level gauge on the front to let you see minimum and maximum levels. I only put in three gallons of water. I love how the level meter is "float" controlled by the water in the tank. This gives a more accurate reading since adding ice will add to the water level. I recommend no more than 5 gallons if using ice. It has water that runs over the ice to help melt it and it REALLY cools the air down very quickly. Again, buy this and you'll never regret it!!!! Very happy customer and I am buying 2 more!

The High Humidity Experience in Hawaii
I recently moved into a new apartment. Although it did not face the sun, it still got unbearably warm in the afternoon and retained that heat throughout the evening. Fans did surprisingly little to make my nights tolerable and my only other choice – unless I cared to break the building’s rules by sneaking in a portable air conditioner – was to have a window-mounted AC unit installed. For this slice of civility, I would need to pay more than $1,500 over the duration of my lease. For some people, that might be a worthwhile expense. However, it just made me feel like the money in my wallet would evaporate along with the heat. Since a third fan would not likely accomplish what the first two could not, I looked around for swamp coolers. The fact that they function less well in high humidity was dispiriting, but I decided to take the risk and buy this unit. After using it for a month – and because I did not see many reviews from others using it in humid environments like Hawaii – I feel confident writing a review. PROS - Makes temperatures bearable (in certain conditions) - Significantly cheaper than air conditioning To make sure I could properly assess how well the unit functioned, I bought a humidity and temperature monitor. I used this model ( ThermoPro TP55 Digital Hygrometer Indoor Thermometer Humidity Gauge with Jumbo Touchscreen and Backlight Temperature Humidity Monitor ) and strongly suggest that anyone considering a swamp cooler buy a humidity monitor for reasons I will discuss below. For the week before my unit arrived, my bedroom’s average temperature was in the upper 80s with humidity hovering around 50%. When I first used the cooler, I placed the thermometer in front of the air outlet and the temperature dropped to 80 ºF and the humidity rose to around 60%. This was more than enough to be able to sleep comfortably and even get under a blanket because it got too cold. Great! What a change from sleeping in the buff. The instructions recommend keeping a window AND door open to let the humidity escape, but I prefer to keep the door semi-closed for a bit of privacy. This traps the moist air and increases the humidity to around 65%. When I wake up in the morning, the air coming from the unit feels only slightly cooler than air blown by a fan. This has been further corroborated by my experience when the ambient humidity (i.e. without the swamp cooler running) is around that figure. In such conditions, the cooler functions as little more than a fan. For this reason, I think it is critical to have realistic expectations of what this unit will do. If your room’s humidity is significantly more than 50%, I would not recommend this product. This also means that you must be okay with not getting value from the unit on days that are unusually humid, which may be the very days you would most want to cool yourself down. Furthermore, it is important to remember that this will NOT cool an entire room. It must face a person or a bed. Of course, this unit has benefits that might outweigh its drawbacks. Hawaii has the nation’s highest electricity prices, which makes operating an AC unit – even sparingly – a painful experience for those on tight budgets. The more you pay for electricity, the more attractive this unit becomes. Since it only requires tap water and does not draw more power than a 100-watt lightbulb, it is also a much more environmentally friendly option than air conditioning. CONS - Loud - Bright lights Even on the lowest setting, the unit’s fan is both strong and loud. When I run it on low during the day with my windows open, I can just barely make it out over the sound of the nearby freeway. On high, it competes with the loudness of the nighttime freeway itself. At night, this does not particularly bother me since I sleep with ear plugs, but it might bother someone who is a light sleeper or has trouble getting to sleep in anything other than total silence. I wish the unit were a bit quieter, but I feel like I would have to spend twice as much to get a product that does that. The unit’s front has a series of intense blue lights to indicate fan speed, cooling, whether it is on a timer, and oscillation. Unfortunately, this only adds to the swarm of other things in my room the emit light when I am trying to sleep. I wish the manufacturer had included an opaque slide I could put over the lights to block them at night or had positioned there somewhere else so it would not face me while I am in bed. CONSIDERATIONS - Requires daily refilling - Heavy - Maintenance Using the unit on its highest setting overnight depletes the water tank. I could get two days of use on medium or low. In either case, however, I end up refilling the unit daily. This does not bother me since my bedroom is only a few steps away from my bathroom, but it is an extra minute or two that one must add to their routine. I separate the tank from the top half containing the fan when I refill the unit. However, filling it up all the way makes the entire thing surprisingly heavy. This may not make the swamp cooler a good fit for the elderly or those with disabilities. Moreover, it is impossible to tilt the unit and wheel it around. The tray that you are supposed to use to fill the unit opens and lets water escape. Whose bright idea was it to not include a latch or something? The instructions recommend performing monthly maintenance on the unit. I have not gotten around to doing that, but when I pour out the old water I do sometimes notice that it is slightly dirty – almost like lightly used mop water. This is because it is pushing air through a curtain of water that captures a lot of dust and other particulates that are floating around. Gross, but if it were not in the water, I would be breathing it in just the same. At any rate, I will update this review when I get around to cleaning the unit, but people considering buying it should be aware that it requires more maintenance than a traditional air conditioner.

Bad situation from beginning to end. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE. Machine broke after 11 weeks - I can not get it fixed!
Update 9/9/2015: After speaking with customer service, they said that I can send it back for a refund; but, that they do not know "how" much money I will get back. The warehouse determines how much of a refund I should get. I guess that this must be a percentage of how much they think they can resell it for. So, I have tried to repair it myself. I have called repair men and they do not know where they can find a replacement pump for it. I lugged the machine down to National Swamp Cooler, a company that sells all kinds of swamp coolers including gigantic industrial coolers, and the parts to go to swamp coolers. That guy said he had no idea as to where I am could get a replacement pump for it. He suggested that I go to Lowes and get a pond pump. So I did. I bought a fountain pump and cut a hole in the cardboard filters for the pump's plug to go through and that works just fine. An additional $35.00 in cost. But now I have the thing up and running again. What a nightmare. Update 8/23/2015: Amazon customer service referred me to the warranty information. The warranty and service is handled by another company called KAZ. They only handle defects in workmanship not normal wear and tear. I suspect that sediment has entered the water pump and has caused it to stop working. Now, I have cleaned this machine religiously every month which is one month sooner than the instruction manual recommends. It is because this is a bad design. The water pump is located on the bottom of the machine with absolutely no filter to protect it from sediment entering it causing it to stop. According to their warranty, KAZ will not cover this. This is after just 11 weeks of use. As of this writing they have 11 used machines. DO NOT BUY ANY OF THIS BRAND - NO MATTER IF IT IS DISCOUNTED. THESE USED MACHINES ARE SOMEONE ELSE'S NIGHTMARE. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE PERIOD - IT IS A WAY OF STEALING YOUR MONEY. Update 8/21/2015: This machine was delivered on 5/29/2015. As of yesterday 8/20/2015, it no longer pumps water to cool the air. JMA North America, which handles the servicing of these machines, has a voice message that we need to call Jmatek (852) 2559-5522 (int). Jamatek is in Hong Kong and even though it is only 10:30 Friday morning, it is actually 1:30 am on Saturday in HK. So the earliest I can speak to anyone about this is going to be on Monday. I am so glad - I am glad that this weekend is going to be only 102 -104 degrees instead of the 108 - 111 degrees that we have been having. Let's see this next episode of "It's not my fault - I'm not responsible." In the beginning: Worst experience. I am currently on my third machine. The machine is not as advertised; and, I have experienced the same difficulties that the other reviewers have experienced who have given negative reviews. This machine is worth maybe $100 to $150 not the going price of $350. First, I'll discuss the machine. Machine: It is not like it is advertised. It says that it hold 12.5 gallons of water and will cool a 600 square foot room. This is a complete lie. I measured the water capacity and it only takes 129 cups of water which is a little over 9 gallons. Also, I have this in my living room/dining room area and that is less than 400 square feet and it won't cool that. The water capacity is a factor if you want to leave the machine running while you're away. The water will last between 7 to 9 hours max depending on how hot and dry the air is. This is not long enough if you want to leave this running for pets during the day while you work. The solution to this is to use the hose hook up. However, if you live in an apartment like I do this can be a problem. You will need to attach it to your faucet which will require an additional expense to get a hose/faucet adapter. The machine is cheaply made. It's just a hard shell; and, there is no inner water tank. So, if you should get a crack in the bottom lower third of the machine, you are S.O.L. and out $350. All of the water will leak out which is what happened to me with the first machine. On the first day, it leaked water out all over my floor and carpet - 9 gallons - and Amazon was completely apathetic. The machine operates by drizzling water down honeycombed shaped filters that are inside the machine covering the side and back vents. It cools by the fan, located towards the front vent, sucking air through the water drizzled filters and blowing the cooled air out the front. This machine will cool an indoor room about 5 degrees under low humidity with the temperature up to about 105 degrees; but, after that it just can not lower the temperature of the hot air - it just blows out hot air. The honeycombed filters seem to be nothing more than resign treated cellulose cardboard and are fairly fragile. In order to replace these filters, you would need to contact a company named Sylvane and the set costs $50.00. One of the more hidden aspects of this machine is the cleaning. I was told by JMA Honewell (the U.S. company) that I was "lucky" that I can clean it. Oh joy. The machine never lost its chemical smell; in fact, it only got worse. The manual advises cleaning the machine at least every 2 months. Again, bad information. You will need to clean this about every 2 weeks. I had had my last machine about 27/28 days and had gotten very sick. I came down with a fever and could not imagine where I got it from. I had been breathing in that foul smelling air so I decided to investigate. I took off the back panel and was shocked and horrified. First of all, the amount of scale that builds up on everything is astronomical. It looked as if someone threw a Kefir yogurt inside and let it solidify. White scale was encrusted on everything. And it is not easy to get off. The remaining water at the bottom of the tank looked as if frogs had been nesting in it. Now, I put at least 2 to 3 tank fulls of fresh water in it every day, so why this water was so disgusting I don't know why. But, you should drain your machine at least twice a week and clean the scale off every two weeks. A little bit of maintenance there that they don't tell you about. I called JMA to ask them what can be used to clean the scale off and they said just a little bit of vinegar water that's all. They suggested letting the filters dry completely before taking a soft brush to them. As if a soft brush would clean the scale off. And when the filters dry completely, they recommended raising them about 2-3 feet off the floor and then drop them in order to help loosen the scale. They also recommended a tooth brush to help clean. I can't imagine the amount of work hours I will have to invest in order to keep this machine operational. To get your replacement filters here is the website: http://www.sylvane.com/honeywell-cooling-pad-for-co48pm.html Amazon Customer Service: First of all, let me preface by saying that I have worked in customer service for nearly 30 years. I know what customer service is and what it is not. Amazon has no customer service. Out of all the phone calls that I had to make, only one person seemed not only competent but actually knew what customer service is and his name is Randall. He was soon removed from my case and I had to deal with people who could not understand what I was saying. They only kept repeating over and over again information that was not correct and in as much that I spent hours trying to get it through to them what I needed, they would not understand. For the life of me, I do not understand why corporations put the care of their customers in the hands of people, such as the Philippines, where there is so much anti-American sentiment. I spent anywhere between 35 to 45 minutes at a time with their customer service reps and got nowhere with these people. It was a nightmare. Once I asked to speak to a supervisor because I could not get through to the rep and the supervisor had the worst snotty, uninterested, unhelpful attitude. He literally said that I was lucky that he was speaking with me. Finally out of frustration I told him that I felt like returning the third machine also, he said that was fine and that he will send the return sticker. He was not assisting me at this point: he was provoking the return. He was not helping to find a solution to my problem: he was bringing his own psychological issues into the situation and defending his ego. All of this is on their "recorded conversations" should anyone at Amazon give a rat's ass and want to investigate which I know won't happen. I have been a frequent shopper at Amazon starting in 2001. I estimate that I have spent in the neighborhood around 10k which is not as much as some customers but it should show my loyalty. But, after this experience, I can say no more. I'm taking my customer loyalty and my 10k and shopping somewhere else. They are great when you want to give them money, but, they are horrible when you have an issue. Their immediate attitude is that you're trying to pull a fast one on them. But you would think that if they just looked at my record where I have asked very little of them, that they would see that I am an honest customer with a very bad machine. If you feel compelled to buy this machine, I would advise you to buy it at Home Depot. They have a 90 return policy: the machine is the same price: and they have free shipping.

I've had it for maybe a couple weeks now and so far it seems to be doing a good job. However
This actually works very well. I've had it for maybe a couple weeks now and so far it seems to be doing a good job. However, you really need to understand how to operate it properly to get the best results. Here are some notes to take into consideration: 1. It works best in the low humidity, but it's going to gradually increase the humidity in the room as it runs. 2. It's not going to cool the room like an air conditioner would, but if you have ice around it will cool similar to an a/c while it's using the ice. It actually gets to the point where you need to shut it down from getting the room too cool, but not when it's running only on water. 3. The water basin holds a lot of water. I've been using a 6 gallon plastic water bottle and a battery operated water pump. It makes it super easy to fill. If not, you'll need to have maybe a 2 gallon container to fill it. 4. One of the things I don't like is that you can get a slight odor in the air. I don't believe this is from the actual unit, but from the water when it adds humidity to the air. I'm going to try one of those aromatherapy diffusers, but it doesn't arrive until today. Hopefully this will help keep the air smelling fresh. 5. The unit will work with or without the window open. I do both because you get the fresh air from outside circulating. However, it will add humidity to the air faster with the window closed, which can sometimes make the room more comfortable if it's typically dry. All-in-all, it works great. There's just a learning curve to understanding what it will and won't do, plus how to set it up. Would recommend for sure. :-)

Portable, Effective and Simple To Use!
At least in the dry heat of the Arizona desert, this evaporative cooler works amazingly well. I purchased one for the Arizona room which is all windows and not connected to the in home A/C. The room is about 160 square feet and with the cooler on one side and a window open about six or eight inches on the opposite side, the room stays cool up to midday when the temperature approaches 100 degrees. I tested the cooler to cool my garage which I recently made into a part time game room and it also cooled that space through the entire day. The garage is just over 350 square feet. I opened the garage door just a few inches to force the air through the room while testing but I will be installing updrafts this week which should help the proper air flow. This cooler is extremely portable and can be lifted even when full of water but it also has an automatic hose fill. An earlier review stated you needed to watch the water level but that is not true. There is a float mechanism inside and the proper adapter for standard hose connection is included so the only time you need to concern yourself with the water level is if you choose to fill it manually. The front blades can be angled up and down, and the inside blades can be set to move left and right automatically, or they can be locked in one direction. A tip from someone who has spent most of their life around what we call "swamp coolers" is that they only work in with very dry air like in the desert and it is crucial that you create as tight a seal around the intake area of the cooler while providing specific direction for the air flow. The outside air must be "led" through the room or it will exit right near the cooler. I created a template that fits in the doorjamb of the side door of the garage out of cardboard which seals that area cheaply and effectively. I most likely will make a permanent one out of a thin panel of wood, but the cardboard works very well.

Somewhat Successful
I live in the Bay area, California in an in-law unit that is partially underground and therefore not really equipped for air conditioning, so I picked this up in hopes of cooling my small bedroom even just a bit at night. I read in a few places that this is *not* designed for humid areas--it's really only for dry heat--so I figured it would work relatively well in my circumstance. The result was not spectacular but not horrible either. I have been using it for about a month now, and I have a few observations: - It blows somewhat cooler air than a regular fan. It requires that you have windows open around it, so it's a bit hard to tell what is just pulling in cooler air from outside and what is cooling that it's actually doing. It definitely isn't anywhere near approaching what an air conditioning would do, in case you are hoping for a significant change in the temperature. - I tried putting cold water/ice cubes in the tank and it helped a bit, though the process is a little challenging. The tank is pretty big, so you would have to chill a fair amount of water to make a difference. Additionally, unless your ice cubes are on the smaller side, they will not fit in the chilling tray and you will actually need to remove the entire top to get them into the tank, as far as I can tell. It's not an impossible process, but definitely not a seamless one (and it virtually always results in some degree of spillage). - A full tank of water lasts you a good amount of time, so you don't need to do a lot of repeated filling even if you are planning to use it most nights. - It's pretty loud. It doesn't necessarily bother me because it's probably about the equivalent of a white noise machine, but if you prefer total silence when you sleep, and if this is anywhere near your head while you're sleeping, it might bother you. - It's pretty easy to move around. The wheels on the bottom make it pretty mobile, so you don't have to worry too much about it being cumbersome. Overall, it has helped a touch--maybe not quite worth the price, but if you are desperate and in an environment with dry heat but no possibility of an air conditioning, this is a helpful tool.

First unit defective & returned. Second unit seems good and useful, even with pretty high humidity.
After removing unit from packaging, inspection determined that it only came with 4 of the 5 vertical "swinging" blades. One blade had not been installed at the factory. I checked numerous photos and videos online to verify it was not correctly assembled and incomplete. Very disappointing as I have had very good luck with Honeywell products in the past. I will be returning it for a good unit. Got replacement unit. Rating now 5 stars instead of 1. This unit appears to be complete. After the first one I received, I would recommend that you closely inspect one you purchase. I've never had a bad product from Honeywell before, so I'm assuming it was a one-off, at least that's what I'm hoping. Even on low, this unit has a decent fan for a small room (100-110 square feet) and the air does seem slightly cooler when it has water in it and it's set to cool. It's not a huge difference, but it's comfortable and doesn't produce overwhelming humidity, but I hope you have a set-up like mine where you can put it in an open door and crack an opposite window for cross-flow ventilation to keep the humidity down. Here in Minnesota, the summer humidity is often just barely low enough (under 50-60%) for reasonable effectiveness. I only really use the A/C late at night, and this evaporative cooler should reduce my costs further, given that I only really need to cool a small room in a large house. Also, taking into account that I'm a trim guy who lives alone, if it gets hot, I simply take my shirt off and use only the fan set on low. In a small rom, On low speed the fan isn't objectively noisy and moves more than enough air. I keep odd hours and setting my A/C to barely run from 2AM to 8AM plus the Honeywell fan/cooler seems so far to be saving me a ton on my A/C bills.
