It was a memorable few nights in August 1962 when these performances were captured in stereo live at New York's famed Village Gate. Tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, then in his late 50s, was still a force to be reckoned with and, accompanied by a superb Tommy Flanagan-Major Holley-Eddie Locke rhythm section, he was on song, stretching out gloriously on the changes of All the Things You Are and Mack the Knife, on which Flanagan also shines particularly, to pick just two examples of the quality music created. This exceptional quartet was joined on one of these nights by Hawkins' old sparring partner, the unrelenting Roy Eldridge, and the revered, one-of-a-kind Johnny Hodges, whose alto added a sensuous contrast to Eldridge's combustible trumpet and Hawkins' magisterial tenor. The format was simple; a blowing session with some very extended performances. But with jazzmen of this quality around and reputations to uphold, the healthily competitive edge and mutual respect yielded musical moments to remember.

Absolutely magnificent jazz performance
I've loved "Hawkins Alive at the Village Gate" for over 40 years since I first discovered the vinyl album and I love having it on CD along with the Hodges/Eldridge album. Great Hawk with an equally great rhythm section--and Tommy Flanagan at his very best, which means jazz piano at its very best. Worth owning for "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" alone, which is one of my 5-10 favorite recorded performances by anyone.

Excellent "Live" Album, Major Holley, J.J. Johnson, Hank Jones, don't buy their own albums
Excellent Jazz Album, I met Bassist Major Holley leaving the "Village Vanguard" Jazz Club in New York City and asked him if he could remember on which album he had recorded "It's the Talk of the Town" (which is this very album), because I enjoyed it so much, he blushed and answered that he could not remember, because he didn't buy his own albums...years later I met Jazz Trombonist J.J. Johnson at a club in Indianapolis and asked him the title of his old album where he was siting next to a table with his trombone and a glass of scotch, because I had lost that album and wanted to find it again (the album "First Place"), he smiled and said "Thank you, but I can't remember because I never buy my own albums...you take care!", so some news about great Jazz Artists: They don't collect their own records. I took a long walk with Pianist Hank Jones in Denver and told him he should play more concerts, he said he was in the recording studios all the time. Now, I wish I had asked for their autographs.
