A classic tome for the Erickson legend
Milton Erickson is a legendary figure in psychotherapy. This book captures the essence of his techniques and shows the reader, whether client or therapist, the key principles behind Erickson's approach. First and foremost Erickson worked with the client's unique personality and situation, never trying to fit a client into some kind of diagnostic pigeonhole. This approach is key in gaining the client's trust and establishing solid ground for the client to access her own inner resources for healing. Each chapter and its subsections is arranged with an introduction to the topic, a series of quotes from various sources involving Erickson's work (writings, interviews, etc), completed with a summary. I found this arrangement extremely helpful for understanding and absorbing the material. The most important text is found on page 315 where the author explains how Erickson's main tactic was to get the client to see a better future and to start subconsciously outlining and taking the steps in that direction. This is an effective combination of hope and action, even if the latter is first only inchoate in the subconscious.

A Birds eye broad view of Milton Erickson's thoughts, perceptions, and ways of performing therapy
"Among our patients here, we can demonstrate many who were such " Model Children" that they never learned the realities of life. In other words the diet of Social Development and Health must include a reasonable amount of roughage " MHE "Perfection is not a reasonable therapeutic goal " MHE. "I had to learn to reconcile myself to the unfairness of life " MHE "Life is much better if sometimes it rains, and sometimes it does not " MHE "Now soldiers on K-rations know how important roughage is to a diet " MHE

and I have been getting deep into some areas---and a good deal of the time I've been going into and ...
This is another of the Erickson books that I had a long time ago and that somehow got lost, so I ordered another copy---and this one is complete! I have been reading it in segments, and I have been getting deep into some areas---and a good deal of the time I've been going into and out of trance and allowing my unconscious mind to absorb those ideas old and new. One thing I always get a real kick out of is the way he says, in a number of different ways, something I've known fo a long time; as I put it, "What's sauce for the goose is not necessarily sauce for the gander", referring to his idea that what will work for, say, Joe Zilch, will not do the trick for, say, Herman Veeblefetzer, and that you have to figure out something that will work for the individual! (I learned this from my wise and wonderful pitching coach years ago.) And on rereading it I'm always discovering something new. Thank you so much!

I recieved this as a Christmas present and I am sure that it will be very enlightening but as yet I have only just started to read it. The print is quite small and it is a very thick book so many interesting hours await

This book goes straight to the bottom line and enormously enlightens the reader to just about every aspect of Ericksonian hypnotherapy. I was able to capture so many insights in to Erickson's ideas and methodology that I regret not having read this book before the others I have read. Indeed, I have postponed reading any other Erickson material until I have finished this book because the information contained therein will result in a much deeper understanding of his work.

Definitely worth a read if you're interested in hypnosis/hypnotherapy
