Some readers will use products that they have on hand, but I find it helpful to know specific name brands and see the actual product as a matter of choice. Though such a book cannot completely cover every aspect of each technique, it is a sound introduction to fundamental processes. The author offers further reference to books, publications and websites of the works by featured artist's, as well as a useful list of resources. Color-coded chapters and an inclusive index make for ease of use, while full-color phots offer visual instruction in conjunction with the text. Cheryl Rezendes has succeeded in her effort to edify, inspire and entertain her readers. Overall, this book is a worthy reference on the subject of surface design for various mediums; a joy to read and peruse. Review: Inspiring Book - I actually checked this book out at my local library and loved it so much that I bought it. It has so many ideas to try and inspires creativity. Easy to read and gives specific directions and ideas.

Many great techniques are covered.
Love the scope of material covered. Many, many techniques shown. Hard to find a book that deals only with fabric surface design. This book covers stamping, stenciling, monotype, gelatin prints, silk-screening, image transfer, marbling, drawing, sewing embellishment, nature printing, relief printing, resists, acrylic spray. Each of these subjects delves into sub-group subjects. Great photos of processes and finished items for reference. Good book for the value!

Excellent Book!
Great book! I bought supplies but haven’t had a chance to try painting and stamping fabric since I am still unpacking from a move but the author was so thorough I have no doubt that I will be able to create the look I am going for. Excellent!

great overview of fabric surface design, (review by a newbie)
First let me say that I am not an artist, only a hobbyist. The author covers many, many techniques for fabric design. The instructions are written simply, for a novice to follow, and although I haven't attempted any of her instructions yet, they are well explained and I do not foresee any problems following them. I enjoyed the profiles of fiber artists with their work, and I appreciate the color theory review. She gives a great list of references and sources, which will be a future treasure hunt for me. I do wish the techniques went a little deeper and broader, for example tips or instructions on how to combine several techniques.

Most thorough coverage of topic I have found
I recently got interested in surface design and have bought 7 or 8 very good books on the topic. Now with this book, my library is complete. If I had bought Fabric Surface Design first, I wouldn't have bought most of the others. Every possible tool for surface design is described with benefits and limitations, methods and alternatives clearly described, and product recommendations. The illustrations are excellent and the profiles of several fabric artists are interesting.

Fabric Surface Design by Cheryl Rezendes
There are numerous books out on textile surface decoration and treatment, but I think that this book offers new insights for old solutions. I have been in the hand painted silk design business since 1987 and am always experimenting and looking for new ideas of textile treatment design. I came across this book and know that it will be a great reference guide for new designs.

This is a remarkable book! It covers quite a wide range of techniques, including stenciling, screen printing, block printing, batik and assorted resists, rudimentary shibori, handpainting, and more, but with enough practical detail and step by step photos that one really could use the techniques described with little confusion. It includes some fun variations on traditional techniques that can help inspire your creativity. It is impressively comprehensive given that it is not actually a thick book. One point to note, the author almost exclusively uses fabric paint, not dyes. So if you prefer working with dyes, some adjustments may need to be made, but it is still very worthwhile nonetheless.
