I had the great fortune in 1985 to attend a two day lecture ...
I had the great fortune in 1985 to attend a two day lecture by Father DeMello. I went by myself and there were about 200 people attending as I recall. I sat next to an older gentlemen who was not a fan. Despite the constant negative comments from this gentleman, I was enthralled by Father. He gave me a spark of hope that has grown into a love for Jesus I am still immersed in. I have watched his videos, heard the Wake up to Life tapes many times, read most of his books more than once. Carlos Valles book - Unencumbered by baggage - gave me a profound respect for Father DeMello as well as many talks with a Doctor who knew him well. This has become my favorite book or thoughts of this good priest. Not because it is a recent release but it uses all of his concepts developed in Wake Up To Life and really - for lack of a better phrase - brings it all together. He was a godsend in my life - bringing me hope at a time that I did have any. He has helped me become a stronger Catholic. One of my most profound spiritual moments was when I was discussing one of his teachings with a friend and told my friend that I disagreed with Father DeMello on one of his teachings and -at that time - I could see him in heaven winking at me and saying - finally John - you are beginning to get it. He is - despite certain reservations from some Catholics about him - a great teacher of Jesus Christ and maybe one of the best in the 20th century. Thank you Jesus for bringing him into my life.

Yet another GREAT BOOK?
I just found this author & have already completed 2 books of his in less than 2 weeks & will read all books! As an avid reader & although not necessarily Christian but rather spiritual, I absolutely love this author & I've read many. I feel as though he actually nails it & has put the 100's of books I've read into one! So transforming, easy to understand, informative, etc. I can't say enough, just incredibly grateful I found this author. I highly recommend!

True to the heart
Stay true to his teaching, I have been learning and practicing de mello approach since the past 2 years. This book just confirms all the things that I have understood and clarify. The heart of the book or his approach is to be one with Him or to be enlighten or what ever you want to call it is to drop all attachments , illusions, some people will call it false self. This includes all attachments to people, to things and yes to spiritual things. Only after we drop everything, then we becpme born again, to be our true self, to reach enlightenment to become what we already are. We finally be able to meet Him and to be united with Him.And that's heaven on earth!Of course the secret to be enlighten is to become aware - like he always said "awareness - awareness - awareness"! Only when we become 'aware' then we could drop our attachments, our illusions, our false self. There is no other way!

Sets a clear principle to live by
Through devotion to God, we transcend our ego self and merge into God. We ask what God would want and honestly answer that question experiencing the grace to take the right actions.

Anthony De Mello is a great spiritual writer
Anthony De Mello is a great spiritual writer. Provides you with unique perspectives---outside the box. Excellent! Really deepens one's prayer life and relationship to Christ.

To Religious - not what de mellow was about
This one is a sort of retelling of de mellow and feels sorta preachy and to religious for what I was after.

Reflection on the Spiritual Exercises
I heard of this book by a chance conversation with someone just before I became involved with the Ignatian exercises. Far too much has probably been said about the Spiritual exercises and is there anything new to say one might ask? Anthony de Mello's untimely death in 1987 left this manuscript unfinished and unedited. The editors have done a great job restoring, ordering and blending the text which came to them in the form of poor quality carbon copies, and had I not read elsewhere Gerald O'Collins account of the task I would never have been aware of the editing.Anthony de Mello was a prolific contributor on the subject of spirituality during his lifetime. The Exercises seem to be in vogue at present and have crossed denominational boundaries and even faith traditions, so I like the way he often blends the insights of his own Indian culture into his writing. He was of course a Jesuit and retreat giving and the Exercises were central to his mission. I think this posthumous book contains an interesting blend of some of the insights gleaned from his life's work with the Exercises and I found it a very useful 'alternative perspective' during the period of the retreat. I can't in honesty say if it will speak so directly to someone who does not know Ignatius and his method as it is obviously based round some concepts made explicit in the retreat but I think it's well worth the risk!

too christian!
Well, the reason I love De Mello is because he blended a bit of all religions into his later teachings. Here he focuses on the spiritual exercises of st. ignatius. And he doesn not tell those awesme stories he told later on in Awareness and Rediscovery of life. So, this book isn't for me.

Getting closer to god...
Reading this is to want to get closer to God, i'd say mostly a Christian god, but perhaps it works in general. It is very deep and sometimes seems contradictory. I think that for non-atheists there are moments in life for deep reflection on god and on love, this book would help. Anthony de Mello was amazing.
