» Review: Great edition of a French Classic - I took French for many years in school and was at a high intermediate to low advanced level. I haven't taken a French class in almost 20 years and have had little opportunity to use it so I have forgotten a lot. Several weeks ago, I decided to order some books in French so I could start reading and hopefully remembering much of what I have forgotten. After reading reviews, I bought this version of Pagnol's classic. It has been a fun read! So charming!! The best part for a student of French is that there are some vocabulary words and phrases in the margin as well as a glossary in the back of the book. It makes it so much faster and easier to read with these references included in the book. To me, it's an easier and more enjoyable read than some of the Camus novels (La Peste and L'etranger) which are often recommended for first reads. I just wish the other books in the Souvenirs d'enfance Series had editions like this one! I would not recommend this book for a person just beginning to study French, however, someone with a year or so of serious study could probably get through it if they had a lot of patience. Review: A Lovely Read for an Intermediate Level in French - My French tutor in Lyon - online tutoring at Preply - recommended this non-fiction account of an early 1900's boyhood of a famous French director. He grew up in the south of France and tells charming and droll stories of his boyhood, family and town. I usually have to look up 10-20 words per page. But the accounts are simple and humorous. He delineates his family members, friends and situations well. The chapters are mercifully short. You can read one chapter per night or easily per week for class. You will learn a lot of new vocabulary around situations: school experiences, a new baby, vacation, going to the park. The author can turn ordinary experiences into humorous vignettes. All of the characters are fairly lovable. It's an enchanting read!

perfect father's day gift
"La gloire de mon père" is a book written in the XXth century by a French writer, Marcel Pagnol. The book is easy and fun to read. It depicts Provence and the life of a French family: vacations, births, new homes, family discussions, children's lives, etc. It is the perfect gift for the person who likes France, especially Provence, and does not read french.

C’était un échange très agréable.
A tidy paperback version of a modern classic. I read (a lot of) Marcel Pagnol’s César, perhaps enough to think I can begin to understand Marseille in the 50s (way ahead of Mick & Bianca). I’m only on chapter 8 of La Gloire, but I am fascinated with Pagnol’s snapshots of easily overlooked events. He not only invites us to notice them, he also suggests how doing so raises the chances that we will be witness to even more remarkable events in the future. I decided after the first few pages, je dois voyager à Aubagne. This novel is not unlike what was described to me as I was learning French in high school, on le possède (ou un roman comme ci !). Humanities-oriented adds—a prologue, index of important dates, etc.—only make it more charming. The narrator is a precocious (sociopathic) boy whose superior intelligence lets him navigate the world of adults with wry observations, much to the reader’s delight. Somehow he manages to prevail almost every time. Note: I am not a Francophile—Francophobe is more like it. Learning to understand and (barely) converse in the language has engaged and challenged me depuis la classe première, mais j’ai peur. Peut-être les gens d’Aubagne me donnent « le slack ». And…, watch lone kids who appear to be feeding ducks at a pond. Merci

I Want More Like This
Maybe I missed something in the product description, but I was delighted to find Pagnol's elegantly simple prose augmented by marginal English translations of less-than-basic French words. So far, I haven't had to resort to a dictionary at all. There is also a French-English glossary in the back. It even has photographs! In addition to the single-word translations in the margins, there are below-the-text translations of idiomatic phrases. This is especially helpful for those phrases specific to Provence. Pagnol is always a pleasure to read, but to do it without juggling a French dictionary is a real joy. I do not suggest that you are as lazy as me, but I admit to it, and hope for more of this type of publication.

né à Aubagne
Comme Marcel Pagnol je suis né à Aubagne, j'ai fait découvrir à mon fils le Garlaban et les chemins de Pagnol jusqu'à la Treille. Mon père siégeait au conseil municipal d'Aubagne aux cotés de Marcel Pagnol.

That I'll get used to reading from an electronic device instead of a "paper" book.
Book arrived on time, which is very pleasing. All there - I thought that maybe it would be a "tater", with only the first chapter.

La gloire de mon père
Je viens de voir le film et je voulais lire le livre ensuite. Le film est fidèle mais le livre est beau.
