Gary Fong Lightsphere Colored Dome Kit

Overpriced and the instructions are nearly useless.HOWEVER, after I finally figured out how to properly use the camera settings on my Canons, the results of shooting at the correct color temp are AMAZING! No more guessing! I had only been off by 500 degrees and yet the difference is astounding. An additional minor benefit of the domes is you can see the broad variations in the lighting in the test picture.If you are shooting video on DSLR's, the video files are NOT RAW; they are jpg. Which means the better the color settings are in the original file, the better the output color. For us primarily still shooters, this is a difficult concept since we're probably used to making whatever adjustments we want in camera raw. But my new understaing on this is that video in DSLR's is less flexible. I always used a gray card for post, but getting the color temp correct up front, esp for video is an amazing improvement. Compared to a few other devices, I like the domes because you can use them on any lens and they are indestructible.One last thing, on Canons, after selecting the picture you take as your custom white balance source, you have to go back and select "Custom" as the white balance type in the White Balance selector. It is so weird it took me a while to figure that one out.The camera won't tell you what the temp is, which is a major bummer, but if you shoot a raw pic before your video, PS will tell you the temp of that raw file, which is how I know I had been shooting about 500 degrees high in most of my vids.If the instructions had explained how to set the camera, which they should do since there are really only a few major brands out there, then I'd give the product itself 5 stars. Esp if the price was a bit lower.

It rarely gets a different result than a much cheaper gray card. If it is different at all it is very minor. Size is good for packing away, but if you intend to white balance with it in camera it can be tough since the dome is pretty small. I find myself just barely hanging out of the edges of the metering circle with my Sony to use the set WB function. Even just holding it still enough to get it to meter properly can be tough since there is a very small margin for error. You only have to move it a tad to pick up background color in the metering circle rather than only gray which screws up the balance. There are definitely cheaper alternatives that are easier to use, and will get you very similar results.

Good product from a man whom I highly respect that knows his photography.Bought this 'kit' to use with my Sony A77II to achieve more accurate and consistent white balance.Will be using the gray dome mostly and was not all that impressed with the neck strap design.So I attached a small P&S camera strap (that I had purchased some time ago for a camera I no longer have) to the gray dome.The strap is a good reminder for me to use the device and takes up little space in the camera bag.The rest of the gear will just collect dust for now. Gary has some excellent instructional videos on u-tube that explain how to use the equipment. Highly recommended!

I just got them today and had to give them a try. I have some very poor and mismatched lighting in one of my rooms. I couldn't stand it and had to give it a shot. I had watched all the youtube videos and set the custom WB on my Canon 5D. All I can say is WOWWW. Perfect WB for the first time in that room, even using a regular flat gray card. I didn't like the price, but I hated the odd WB I was getting. I'm a happy camper now.

Handy little tool that I appreciate coming across. I am able to nail and get a correct in camera white balance reading every time. Works flawlessly with the Sony a7 iii custom white balance feature.

Works exactly as I expected it to. I watched the Gary Fong tutorials on YouTube for my Alpha 6000 camera and after seeing how quick and easy it was for him to automatically set the white balance, I had to buy this. I wasn't let down. It fixes everything prior to post, which gives you much more control and accuracy when tweaking or editing your video for final production. For how cheap it is, it's amazing. What a novel idea!

I've never really been happy with any Gary Fong product I've purchased. That's not to say that in the hands of a more skilled photo shooter the stuff might perform like a champ, but it hasn't worked for me. I purchased the white/grey white balance calibrators for a friend. When I tried to show him how to use them I've never been more embarrassed in my life. We were in a room with natural sunlight coming in through the window, and a couple of lamps with just regular light bulbs in them. I set up a piece of white poster board to show him what a great difference the Gary Fong product could produce, - only to have the camera's WB looking better on Auto WB rather than the white plastic. I'm a fan of Gary Fong and I'm not here to disparage him, so I will close here.

to stop relying on your camera's built-in, arbitrary white balance settings, this is the way to go. When your white balance isn't set properly, your photo will automatically have a color cast. This little kit gives you two ways to arrive at accurate white balance, which means you start from "Go" in image processing instead of from two or three squares behind. Simple to use, and correct white balance will immediately improve the quality of every image you shoot.
