The U.L.U is incredibly useful in a multitude of environments, including big-game hunting, wilderness survival and at home in the kitchen. The curved razor-sharp edge is a customer favorite for finely dicing vegetables and spices at home. The U.LU can be used two ways, in open position, or by vertically sliding the spine of the blade into the handle (curved belly edge remains exposed). This allows for a closer more stable full palm grip, ideal for chopping. The handle features a non-slip rubber coating for safety and a comfortable grip. Carry confident on your next adventure.

Blade Tech U.R.L. knife (NOT holster)
I use this as a general "kitchen tool" both at home and away from home due to the curved blade (sort of like a real ULU though the "pseudo-ulu" formed by pushing the blade backwards into the handle has issues (see below)) which actually performs ulu-like chores reasonably well. Also, there are no problems with potential food contamination in the handle. This knife is supposed to have two positions: regular locked position, 2nd "ulu-like" position. This "ulu-like" position is OK for SMALL things that work well with the ulu principle, such as chopping, etc. as long as 1) the item is not thick and 2) it's "clean" (i.e. no fat, blood, meat, etc.). When the blade is in this "ulu-like" position, there is very little blade height before food contacts the handle and food could easily become trapped within the handle, and the greasier or more bloody the food item, the harder it would be to "decontaminate" the handle to prevent food-borne illness. NOT A GREAT DESIGN! But using the blade in the "usual" extended position allows some of the positives of the ulu (note I have several ulus and I really like these tools). It is VERY DIFFICULT to close the blade because the liner lock is VERY HARD to retract to allow the blade to disengage and retract back into its normal storage position in the handle. I actually use a small coin (dime, penny) to act to leverage the liner lock to the side so I can close the knife, but I've bent my fingernail back too many times trying to close the knife without some tool to assist me in doing that. It's also difficult to get the blade to go backwards into the handle for the ulu-like position. I mean REALLY difficult. Could possibly "loosen up" over time? Can't say (have had the knife for only about 1 week). But I plan on keeping the knife since it is somewhat unique. If it JUST had the curved blade AND allowed for easy blade retraction, I'd give it 5 stars. But since I'm not planning on using the "ulu-like" blade position often I think 4-stars rating is OK.

Took some touch ups, but I love it!
Great all around knive! Useful all around camp and the house, great for skinning medium/large animals in ulu mode, but it does take a bit of practice (I was born and raised above the Arctic Circle using Ulus) had to adjust my technique a tad though. It is a little big for the pocket while closed, though that is totally forgivable considering its usefulness. The knife is not horrible at holding its edge, definitely better than a skillsaw blade-turned ulu!All the edges of the blade were kinda sharp, had to round everything but the cutting edge with a Dremel tool to keep it from wearing through my pockets in record time. The opening and closing was very tricky until I smoothed the edges with the Dremel, now it functions smoothly and easily.Other than that, everything about this knife is very precision made. The fit and finish are something you would see on a knife double or triple the price.

Great in practice as a self defense slasher
Bought it for a portable folding camp/kitchen knife, actually using it for everything under the sun. Great in practice as a self defense slasher. Sharpened it on a spyderco sharp maker using the back bevel setting for the primary edge. It came razor sharp but with a little touch up on the aforementioned setting the hairs now jump off of my arm for fear of being cut!

Overall I like the knife
The clear coating started to peel after about 3 weeks of being carried in my pocket. But the knife has kept its edge and work properly.Overall I like the knife.

Buy this
My new favorite knife. Keeps its edge, easy to one hand open. Definitely a conversation starter as well. The movement of the blade to the ULU position is a little tricky, but the knife will break in.

Very unique knife. Very tough steel
So, more than a year ago I ordered one of these knives not really knowing much about them. After playing around with it I discovered what they meant by the “sliding part”. I threw this old gal onto my lansky controlled angle sharpening system and Oh my gosh one of the toughest-sharpest knives I own. I don’t know much about the steel but I can say it probably comes with a 30 degree edge and I cut a 25 degree edge into mine and I spend a lot of time sharpening my knives but the steel is so tough I have to spend twice as long with this knife. Be advised, this thing holds an edge well and is bigger than your average folding knife. I love the knife and wouldn’t change anything about it, so much that When they stopped producing this knife, I called the company and asked them to bring it back. I saw these on amazon again and I ordered 2 more. I will now have 2 black ones and 1 Orange one. Be careful if you decide to put a razor edge on it, much like any other knife.FYI though I don’t know the type of steel, it is stamped china
