Doc Martin Special Collection: Series 1-5 plus the Movies

Doc Martin is a wonderful British Comedy Drama. It of course revolves around medical issues in the town and the quirky personalities of everyone in it. As with most shows it takes an episode or two to develop and has its times of being a bit too corny; however that is made up for with some of the absolute hilarious dry humor. I love it and am watching it for the second time after seeing it several years back.

Martin Clunes has become "Doc Martin" in these series of shows. His style and poise have become to be one and the same as the character he plays. This series is by far the very best produced and acted series of the last century ! Port Isaac is the perfect setting. It is a picturesque village along the western coast of Britain which has lovely little shops, quaint homes and gorgeous gardens and flowers at every home and business. The plush green, rolling countryside is a relaxing scene for many of the filming sights. What a lovely area for this love story to take place.Martin Clunes has such warmth and charm; his normal personality has to be harnessed most of the time to portray the outer roughness and often rudeness of Doc Martin. He uses his wit and skills to enhance the character of Doc Martin. But alas, Louisa, sees through all that harsh, outer shell of Doc Martin to fall helplessly in love with the soft, loving nature that is quietly hiding in the shadows of Doc Martins inner being.Doc Martin is a shy, bashful yet very romantic man. He has his own way of sharing it. Louisa has brought that way to the surface for Doc Martin. I think the character surprises himself at times by "letting his emotions" flow in his love for Louisa.I can express this theory by experience. My fiancé was a Thoracic Surgeon back in the 1970's and early 80's. Uncanny the personality of him and Doc Martin are identical when it came to the romance side of life. He had never married and was 45 when we met; I was 26. He was also 6' 3" tall, weighing 190#, dressed in a suit and tie every day, and kept a "military" hair cut as he was a decommissioned Captain in the U. S. Navy Reserves. He was quiet and very reserved. I became a R. N. in lieu of him sending me to med school. We had plans to marry upon my college graduation from R. N. training. He passed from a fatal heart attack a few months before that happened. He had never married; I have never married and now I'm 72 years old !I know all about how Doc Martin functions in his " own world of medicine" and how the desire to regain his position again as a Vascular Surgeon is such a priority to him. This series is almost a remake of my life, it seems. My "Doc Martin" passed December 11, 1982 but as Louisa continues to love and cherish Doc Martin, I do the same for my surgeon who "lives" in the loving memories I have had to tuck silently into the embrace of my heart all these years.I highly recommend this series for all to watch and enjoy the story line and interactions of all the colorful characters as they enter and depart the life of Doc Martin. Martin Clunes brings this character to LIFE in every scene !

Buying this collection used is a good bargain & makes a good gift!Doc Martin (is a ''country'' doctor, he) has a minor case of ''autism'' & a phobia for the sight of blood - so this is the show's ''shtick''. It's a slow-paced, adult, (no laugh-track) Brit comedy, that moves toward the ''heart-warming''. A good gift for ''grandma'', perhaps?

I now see why this series has such a large fan base. It's funny.This is a terrific cast led by an extremely funny Martin Clunes.Humor is a difficult mask for actors to wear . This cast makes it look effortless.I will give you just a very small taste of the main plot. If you need more then read the others.Martin Clunes plays a surgeon who because of his fear of blood runs back home as the village's new GP(its funny how we all want to run home when it gets rough out there) .Then there are are all the subplots which are addictive show after show. THE SERIES DOES NOT EVEN COME CLOSE to REALITY.BUT, that is not why we watch and enjoy this show. We want to live amongst these good natured odd balls. If you have throat cancer you are cured before the end of the episode. If you are bleeding out the Doc will find a way to pull you through overcoming his great fear.If you are a pyscho you can be cured with a placebo. Its perfect. This village is the greatest cure in overcoming ones ills with the help of this "neurotic" Doctor.If only life was this perfect. If only characters such as these existed in our everday world. So, we live vicarously through this series and laugh. We need to laugh and wish this was the way our lives could be led.The other 5 star reviews are worthy to be read. More plot and productive criticism are given. Almost everyone who wrote a review loves this show for their own reasons. The one star reviews for the most part are not criticisms of the series but of sound or visuals of their copy of dvd , blue ray or stream.I have never seen a show receive an almost perfect(4.9 out of 5) reception till now. I trust the reviewers choices. I purchased this set based on what they had to say. They were correct. This series was certainly worth my time. It is family friendly ,which in my case was not an issue but may be for you and your family. I am passionate towards crime detection series like the excellent FOYLES WAR. There are times I have needed a break and watched shows like Monarch of the Glenn. Another excellent series which was fun to watch to get caught up in others lives.For me film noir, detective procedurals and lock room mysteries lead the way in my dvd entertainment. When I take that break from these intense genres I hope I can find a series as fine as Doc Martin.Thank you reviewers for turning me on to a show that can hold my attention and make me smile . I am a difficult person to please. This show ,so far, has given me that pleasure.PS: Harold Wolf on March 27,2013 gives a wonderful play by play review of the series.Some may find it too detailed but it is very comprehensive and well written . I wanted to discover the happenings of much of the show on my own.Some may consider it a spoiler. It is not. Its more of a recap and gives you clues to what lay ahead.Well worth reading.

I have the version for region 1 and my mom and I love this series. Doc Martin is ingenious, he loves what he does and he sincerely cares for the village he resides in, a beautiful setting and scenery. He goes to great length to care and treat the village residents...to even go into the forest with this ranger who is really different in that he has a giant squirrel for a buddy, and is the only one who knows the area well when one of Doc Martins friends get lost in the countryside, and is bitten by a poisonous snake. Most entertaining as he forages around with his doctors bag, and this lunatic guide. All the episodes are brilliantly created and produced..well thought out. If you live in North America make sure you check the region before purchasing. Ntsc is for region 1 which Canada and united states are part of.Amazon shipped with great care and speed! I was pleasantly surprised when the boxed set showed up only 4 days after ordering them...I was delighted! A great company to order from..not to mention the great pricing! Fabulous!

great set. i have watched a few of the individuals episodes before but not that many and not in order so really looking forward to starting at the beginning. Watched the movies last night and i have to say that Doc Martin's character is a bit nicer and funnier in the movies than the TV series but did not detract from my enjoyment of the TV series.

My Wife and I found that Doc Martin to be a rude and utterly sarcastic British Doctor,but he has quite abit of Charisma in a likable way.We both found him totally delightful and we wait for more in the future.CheersReg Smith

I was hesitant to order this series but have enjoyed British series. Beyond my expectations!! Story line is original, scenery is incredible and very relaxing!A perfect series to share with the whole Family!!
