A trailer hitch camera that works
After several holes in my bumper from hitting the trailer hitch, I decided I needed a backup camera. I tried a wireless backup camera. I liked the ease of installation. It didn't work. After a lot of frustration, I gave up. I decided not to try wireless again. I'm very pleased with the Hopkins Smart Hitch. It is powered by a backup light, so you have to run some wires. I had to drill a hole to get the wire into the passenger compartment. The wire that leads to the camera is sturdy with a connector that doesn't require a large hole to get through. It seems to be reasonably waterproof. I was careful to avoid places where the wire could be pinched by suspension components. I was able to mostly hide the wire once it was inside by tucking it under plastic or carpet, but it is visible in spots. The screen is a little small, about the size of a cell phone display. I can live with it. The display is sharp and updates rapidly in real time. It makes hitching a trailer a snap. The field of view is limited, so the camera is only useful when you get close to the trailer. It has sensors that beep a lot. They aren't really useful to me because I can see the hitch fine. They might be useful in low light. I don't need it for anything but hitching trailers. The small field of view limits its usefulness for anything else. I haven't used it a lot yet, so I don't know how it will hold up to harsh weather conditions. However, at this time I am very pleased with it and would recommend it highly to anyone who doesn't have a factory camera. And doesn't mind running the wires.Update: I gave the impression that the field of view was limited. That isn't true. If you adjust the camera properly, you can actually see the hitch and also see what is behind the vehicle. And the sensors will warn you if you are going to hit something. In its initial configuration, the camera was aimed very low. I continue to highly recommend it.

Great camera.
2008 GMC Sierra Crew Cab. I bought this to hook up my boat and avoid the constant in and out of the truck to check the progress when I'm hooking up on my own which is often. I originally bought a wireless setup but the signal wasn't strong enough to pickup the camera. I returned that and went with this one since its all wired and would not have that issue. I ran the wires along the frame and drilled a hole at the back left corner of the floorboard and continued routing inside the cab through the channels just inside the door all the up to where the EBrake is and up through the fuse box to the very front left corner of the dash which is where I decided to put the camera. The camera for me is easy to see and is out of the way when not using; I did ensure I had the clearance to put a sunshade in so it doesn't bake during the summers. I also decided to seal the electrical box that is behind the license plate with 3M Marine Grade Silicone Sealant to try and prevent water intrusion which I had seen was a problem for other customers. The only issue I had initially was getting the camera to move so I could aim it better; after loosening the side screws and fiddling with it I got it to exactly where it needed to be. Overall is took about an hour and a half to install. Be aware is only works in reverse when installing with the quick connector and you would have to tap into a different power source if u want to use it for more of a full time monitor. Overall, super happy with this purchase, it put me right on the spot first time hooking up.

Great backup camera and sensor
I chose this backup camera because it was a wired system and because it not only includes a camera, but also sensors so it beeps as you get close to backing into something. That part can get annoying if you're backing a trailer, but there is a mute button. I have a 2010 F-150 SuperCrew, short bed and there was plenty of cable to mount the screen at the top of the windshield just to the left of the rear view mirror. Probably a couple of feet to spare. If you have a long bed or maybe an F-250 if you might need an extension or might need to mount it on the dash. The screen is pretty good. I've never had any other aftermarket backup camera so I can't compare it to any of those. It's not as nice as the factory screen on my 2017 Fusion (with the larger touch screen), but that's to be expected. One warning, there's no option to invert the image so if you mount the screen upside down like I did initially by accident you'll have to physically reverse it. When I did that I found that I had mounted the base too high so I could not get the angle correct. I e-mailed Hopkins and they mailed me a new adhesive pad right away, no charge. Was easy to pop the base off, clean the windshield, and remount correctly. I would probably give it five stars if the screen was just a little bit larger and the image quality and colors were a little more vibrant. It's a good screen, but I think it could be just a little bit better. Does the job though and I'm happy with it. Installation was fairly easy as my truck had a trailer wiring harness already. Hardest part was crawling under the truck with zip-ties and routing the cable. Would definitely be easier with a lift.Update: Six months later and it's summer in Georgia. The sticky pad that holds the camera to the windshield can't take the summer heat. Kept falling off. I've removed it and re-attached using a rear view mirror repair kit. I've used those before to remount a mirror on an old car and mirrors are heavier than this screen, so should work fine. We'll see. No change to rating. Relatively minor issue.

A decent way to add a back up camera.
Bought this for my Father who doesn’t have a back up camera on his F-150. Was a fairly easy install but included grommet would definitely not work. Plugs are far bigger than grommet. Surprised how easy it was to plug in to existing tow package. Would like the screen to be larger, my Only complaint. Night vision is good enough. Picture is fairly clear, just small. Better than nothing.

Excelente prodicto 100% recomendado

Superior customer service
Purchased this item and installed on a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Before I installed, I felt I needed some extra cable. I called the customer service department and cable was shipped out and received the next week from the US to Nova Scotia Canada. After installation the features are easily adjusted and although it is a small screen you can clearly see your hitch and trailer hookup. I was told by a technician that hardwiring is best due to the latency with a bluetooth connection. Very pleased with the product however I did notice a small dark blotch on the screen which I determined was coming from the camera (a scratch or something). I could not make it go away and it was distracting. I contacted customer service explained my issue, sent them a photo and my receipt. They not only shipped a new unit out right away but in the box was an apology note for the inconvenience caused too me. I have bought and asked for warranty or service on things many times over my life but never ever have I been treated to good by one company who obviously stand by their products and customers. Many other companies could learn from this. Since then, because of the quality of product and service, I have purchased several other Hopkins products for my trailer. Great people work for them, and they provide superior customer service.

Happy with product when working.
I re-purchased this product for my wife's Yukon Denali XL. I previously installed one on April 23, 2020. We were happy with it but this spring the beeping quit, while the camera still works fine. Rather than purchase a different brand and have to re-wire it, I repurchased this one, although I only needed the sensor bracket. I installed the bracket, plugged it in to the original wiring and it now works fine. Hopefully, this one will last longer. It would be nice if replacement parts were easily available as I now have an extra screen and wiring that I paid for. (the electronic are sealed so no opportunity to try and repair bracket assembly)

Great unit easy install too bad it doesn't come with an extension !
I'm pretty happy with the unit but took a long time to get it to the point where I could use it as no one stocks the extension cables ? You have to contact Hopkins towing solutions and they will send one out to you free of charge but it takes forever ! If you're thinking about buying one call Hopkins right away order the cable the same day you order the unit because you're going to need it ! I have a newer Dodge ram 1500 crew cab with the 5.7 foot box you have to go through the firewall as the undercarriage of the truck is all insulated With a 5 foot extension you can put it anywhere you like with no problems without nowhere nesr long enough to make a clean install The seven pin plug works like a charm It's a really decent kit for the money better than most I've seen for more $$. Screen is a tad bit small but with good driving skills and commonsense the screen is well big enough! Camera and back up sensors work very well just take the time to adjust the sensors properly you will enjoy it ! I looked at many wireless units with the lag or freezing there's no point going wireless the technology just isn't there yet if you could get one that runs at 5.8 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz it might be a little bit more user-friendly This unit is really easy to install might need some sort of wire insulation as you get closer to the firewall as the exhaust gets a little close to the frame rails but just take your time and do it right!

Works great but its camera was always in the way of ...
I bought / install this product in my previous mini-van (2009 GM mini-van) and installed "as is". re: Install with its camera at top of its license plate area. Works great but its camera was always in the way of its rear gate manual handle. On my new mini-van (2017 Dodge Caravan), I simply installed their license plate assembly bracket upside down (so camera is now at bottom of the license plate area) and to bring camera image back into "up side right" image, I then rotated the camera 180 degrees. Used my rotary tool and external caulking to re-adjust and secure the camera's new aim. In the end, it was a clean install and works great. Even passed my wife's quality inspection. LOL! Wish Hopkins company made their factory bracket to allow install of its camera at TOP or BOTTOM area of the license plate. Especially for vehicles that have rear gates with manual open handle above the license plate area. See provided pictures for visual. Hope this helps others....
