Available for the first time on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack comes the popular comic book character Judge Dredd, who is brought to life in this high-octane, sci-fi action movie starring Karl Urban. Review: Robocop+Training Day+Precint 13 = DREDD (NO spoilers) - FOR - Gloriously uncomplicated, gripping tale told with ruthless authority. AGAINST - Graphic violence simply NEVER lets up. SUM UP - Best remake in a generation, finally worthy of the original spirt. Assumimg most of us are familiar with the charactarisation, lets fast foward to how this sets up. Essentially this is Denzels' training day formula retold in MEGA CITY 1 with Karl Urban using ROBOCOP Robocop (Special Edition)[DVD] [1988 ] (80's) as his template for the bitten Judge mentor. Thirlby is alongside as his soberly contemplative rookie. Reluctantly tied together for a day they are presented as opposition to Ma-Ma the merciless as manifested by Lena Headey. There is a refelection of the 70's ASSAULT ON PRECINT 13 Assault On Precinct 13 [DVD ]with its setup of law enforcement officers trying to escape from "their own" turf. IS IT WORTH WATCHING? ABSOLUTELY! The visuals are "dark" and dystopian, captured vividly with plenty of lens flare and for once appropriate use of slo-mo (SIC). The acting is faithful to the genre and the concept and easily up to the mark by all. Apart from DREDD's own weapon the tech is familiar and restrained and largely takes a back seat, but cirtically means this will date slowly. This is an all-out action movie for those who like their action hardened rather than accessible. No-one should be under any illusions of compromising accuracy for the sake of taste. Nothing is spared to the immagination although the relentless energy of the movie can become wearisome (there is only so much shooting you can take......surely?). The pacing is otherwise perfect with little wasted fat along the fairly straightforward journey. Credit is deserved for the simplicity of a film that remains gripping simply because of the desire to see how it finally connects to the innevitable conclusion. It delivers leaving few (relevant) plotholes. Start to finish we never deviate from the obvious in a movie that avoids the trap of being "clever" in its use of reveals and subplots. It gets straight to the point from the off and stays focused with scalpel-like accuracy throughout. WHAT ABOUT US FANS? I believe this will finally appease those comic book fans still dissapointed by STALLONE'S Judge Dredd [DVD] [1995 ]misguided schlock. DO YOU BUY OR RENT OR FREEVIEW? DREDD has Huge replay potential and definately worth a place in your permanent collection. Looks like a future, uncomfortably close to the present - but then we are now well past 2000AD. Review: The Dredd we all wanted - I just finally got the 3D blu ray of Dredd, how did this slip the radar..I hated the Stallone version, Urbans version here is superb keeping to the original 2000ad roots ,with amazing visual effects that if you watch in 3D it must be incredible, but the disc is both 3D and 2D , I only had 2D system but still looks visually amazing.. fantastic story almost entirely set in mega block full of crime and despair waiting to be cleaned up...check out that lawgiver, amazing...if you like SF action, madmax, wick, transporter ...don't miss this!

Nailed it! He IS the Law.
I watched this film for the first time last night having just received the Blu-Ray. I'm a 48 year old man who is very familiar with Judge Dredd having bought the first 2000AD in 1977 and vast amounts since. My companions were a 48 year old woman who knows a bit about the Dredd story and a 15 year old girl who knew nothing. We were ALL gripped and the girl applauded at the end. She rates Dredd as one of the best (of many hundreds) of the films she's now seen. My point is that this film is SO well made and effective that it appeals to a very wide demographic. It absolutely nailed my expectations of Judge Dredd on film, much to my astonishment, and it also was a very entertaining action film for someone coming to the concept cold. The girl is now very into the Dredd character and as locked onto the 'Megacity 1' world as we all were back in the 70s. The makers of 'Dredd' have done an impeccable job, I salute you all. Free of Hollywood interference they've made a REAL compelling story that grips and entertains. Karl Urban is so good as Dredd that I forgot I was watching an actor and just saw the same old Joe Dredd I've known in print for decades ... but alive and moving!!! Cassie Anderson was brought to life beautifully too (pun intended) and the interplay of the two characters is subtle and at times funny but not in a clownish way, it all has integrity. The film looks great, the effects are spot on, the music is spot on, the interpretation of the uniforms and weapons is (to my surprise) spot on. The reduction in size of the judge's shoulder pads annoyed me when I saw production stills but when seen in the film it makes 100% perfect sense and looks fine. The judge's clothes look PRACTICAL for the job they are doing. I can't rate 'Dredd' highly enough. 10 stars, film of the decade ... if only the SAME team could be given a higher budget and NO studio interference to make a sequel or ten to the same or higher standard while the actors are still available. If only ... I you're a Judge Dredd appreciator then you will NOT be disappointed.

For starters, I am a huge JD fan, which made me excited and also worried about this second attempt at bringing him and his world to the big screen. Dredd stands as a stark example of how clear storytelling and a simple plot can make an extraordinary film. The laughable Stallone film tried to shoe horn in too many concepts from the 30+ year history of the character. Dredd, on the other hand, focused purely on the meat of the character, giving only small glimpses of the sprawling universe he inhabits. Judge Dredd may seem hollow and robotic to new comers, but this is exactly why his character is so beloved. The film makers do a great service to the character, and Karl Urban's performance helps to solidify this. I can only smile when reading irate reviews hammering the lack of character development and robotic acting. The reviewers obviously don't understand. There is a reason why JD never takes his helmet off. He is meant to be faceless. He is the one solid and reliable rock in the sea of crazy that is the far future. The one drawback is that this film is very violent, and if you aren't prepared for it you will be turned off fairly quickly. It also makes great use of slow motion to capture and juxtapose the action from different viewpoints. This gives the action scenes a strange pace, but I felt it to be perfectly suited to the plot. It only felt overdone during a couple of sequences. Speaking of plot, this film has taken some knocks because of a thin plot. I find this funny considering how paper thin most movie plots are when compared to novels and comics. The Hobbit is a movie about a long journey, and is great because of what happens along the way and what obstacles they have to overcome. This movie is essentially a day in the life of Judge Dredd, and is about his journey to stop and apprehend a gang leader. It is great because of what happens along the way and what obstacles he must overcome. A simple, clearly stated plot with great story telling wrapped around it is what you will find in this film if you give it a chance. I did, even with my fear of past failures, and I loved it. I don't like the Ultraviolet service, but this disc also has an iTunes compatible download. If there is a drawback, then it is that all of these are crammed onto a single disc instead of giving us a separate disc for the Blu Ray and the digital download. Also, having no DVD version available in the set was a bit of a downer since I like to loan mine out to friends to get them hooked. The digital download worked fine for me, though, and the BR ran perfectly in my 1st generation PS3.

Normally German and Italian UHD disks pick up your region when playing disks and display the menu in English. Not the case on this disk. All in German. But I guess it's very cheap.
