The perfect voiceover mic?
Bought this mic "Used/Good" fulfilled by Amazon in the wild hopes that I could FINALLY find a good voiceover mic... And I'm in love. First, the good: this mic has hardly any self noise, and in the booth I can get voice to a perfect -23LUFS with a noise floor below -54db with the mic 6-8" off my mouth. If you angle it 45° off axis and position it just slightly above, I haven't had huge issues with breath noises, plosives, or anything else, which means I don't need the (excellent) windscreen. I have not yet tried the I closed dead cat but suspect it will work as advertised. The NTG 5 has got plenty of low end for voiceover work, a nice clear and detailed top end without a whole lot of sibilance (I have a fairly sibilant voice AND gap teeth, and am aurally sensitive to sibilance, which isn't fun, but this mic manages it well). It needs just a touch of EQ to sound its best, at least on my voice, but I also tend toward muddiness, so I can't blame the mic there. Bright enough without sounding brittle, harsh or sibilant. Rich enough without adding too much muddiness (unless you get under 4" and hit the proximity effect). Easy to listen to for long periods. Barely even needs EQ. In short, I'm in love! The cons (and this is nitpicky AF) - I wish the pistol grip mount A, came pre-assembled (I immediately lost the miniscule screwdriver included with the mic), and B, that it came in 5/8 diameter instead of 3/8 (and included the usual adapter). I get that it's a "location mic" and that 3/8 is the default for boom poles, but it's more common to adapt up to 5/8 than down to 3/8, if that makes sense. I'd also be happy if they included a 5/8F-3/8M adapter, but ordering one shouldn't be difficult, just a temporary mild annoyance. I haven't tested it outdoors or in an untreated room, but I suspect it'll do well for live recording and outdoor applications. I'll know in another month or two of rode testing if it's the PERFECT voiceover mic, but I shure can't fault the way it sounds in the booth!

Everyone loves its flat sound, I love its crystal clear highs
The convenience of a full kit is undeniable, and usually bundles mean you save some. Am loving this mic, using it alongside my trusted Rode Videomic NTG. They sound similar enough to make it easy in post to match them. But the NTG5 clearly has lower self-noise, better rear 3/4 rejection, and especially far superior rendition of the high frequencies (the Videomic NTG by comparison feels like it's under a pillow, when listening to dialogue in your headphones... well I am exaggerating but you get the point!). It does get boomy with my voice at 12" distance, so I have to tame the low end (I can't imagine how I'd sound with the NTG3!!!), but I guess this could turn into an advantage in extreme cases where the mic has to stand further away from the subject.

It’s a great mic
First one came box was already opened and the mic had a terrible buzz. Sent it back ordered a second came with no problems. What can I say it’s a Rode Mic. You won’t be disappointed.

"Used - Good Condition" ... it sounds like chernobyl reactor 4
first of all- get it together, amazon. my "certified" refurbished mic was missing parts, and if you had tested it, you would've known it's not usable as for Rode, apparently this microphone had a quality control issue. many of them (including mine) shipped with a bizarre type of noise, something far beyond RF interference. the only description i can think of is "squiggly". an obscure youtube review mentions buying two separate models and having it happen on both. be careful everyone!!

Hands down worth every penny!
I have a boat load of shotgun microphones and have to say I wish I would of bought this sooner! very detailed! everything about this microphone \ package is just fantastic. I am 90% nature recording and this microphone is just fantastic for that! So impressed with how far Rode has come in quality and best bang for your $$$$. Plan on buying a second one very soon! Wish Rode had matched pairs!

Amazing sound
Sounds as good if not better than my NTG3 and it’s cheaper!

Although this mic seems outdated for many people because there are hundreds of new models everywhere, it still can perform and compete with even the 2024 models, my experience, is to make sure the XLR cable is far from power cables, and the phone is on plane mode to avoid any kind of interference and noise. It is a must have mic even in the 2024, Durable, light and high quality sound, it is even cheap for what it has as a whole package of items and performance.

Excellent, if short, shotgun microphone by those great Australians. Nicely made with an excellent starter kit containing sensibly chosen and well-sourced parts for microphone holding and use. The kit idea seems very juvenile perhaps, but in fact this package of items is well chosen and the parts seem very well made - not a junior kit. Will be paying attention to RØDE again!

Was sent an open box item. Had to return it as the microphone suffers from RF interference. Clearly I have gotten a mic that was previously returned.
