Time to up my router game
I just bought a new router and decided that it was time to improve my router techniques both hand-held and with a router table. I have read through most of the book and found it to be full of useful techniques and descriptions of router accessories. The book starts with a general description of routers and bits. It then describes the construction and use of common jigs and router tables. The rest of the book is focused on applications such as templating, surfacing, cutting dados, joinery, etc. It is a good read, full of useful illustrations, and makes a good long-term reference. Two specific highpoints:The author presents an excellent description of why a router tends to veer off course when hand-held and why the veering depends on feed direction and bit rotation direction. Understanding why leads to better techniques for controlling the router when using a fence or template. To me, this lesson was worth the cost of the book. There is a description of the design of a sled used to hold workpieces on a router table. The sled improves safety and accuracy. This proved to be a perfect solution for rounding over the edges of small parts in my application. In short, I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to up their router game.

A "must have" for beginner and intermediate router users.
If you are a new router user or want to improve your skills, this book should be in your library. Everything you need to know is at your finger tips. If you watch a lot of videos about router use, don't be surprised to see it on a shelf in the background. I had the original version that had black and white pictures. It suffered a lot of water damage. I'm glad I replaced it! This one has color pictures and updates on router bits and routers in general. I have several books about routers, this is the one I use. Yes, I recommend it. Yes, I would buy it again. Yes, I consider it a great value.

An excellent Router Reference
Everyone who is not already a highly experienced pro with the router will find something in it to make their work easier and more accurate, their projects more professional looking.I've had this book for several months. I didn't read it cover to cover, I read the first three chapters, looked at the next three (I already had a router table) and then skipped to different chapters that had direct answers - jigs and techniques - for the project at hand. Since then, every so often I pick up the book again and look through the book, stopping to read another section. Every time I do, I find another technique or jig to help with what I'm doing. This is a great, simply great reference book for working with the router. Before I bought it, I checked a copy of an older edition out of the library. It was definitely helpful, but the black and white pictures were none too clear. The later editions have been revised and improved with sharp, high resolution color pictures and drawings that are much more helpful. Get the later edition. If you feel you must choose between this book and Hylton's other router book Router Magic: Jigs, Tips and Tricks to Unleash your Router's Full Potential, get this one first, and start saving for that one. Some, but not all, of what's in the Magic book is in this book.

Main focus is router table.
I will keep the book but it is heavily slanted toward use of a router with a router table. Description did not make that clear.

Must have book
The best aspect of the book is that it covers the logic and reasons behind suggested routing techniques. The pictorial renderings are outstanding.Safety also demands one understands first and then attempts.Secondly, Bill Hyton, the author, encourages the reader to make diy jigs that ensure accuracy, repeatability and save time.I am a novice and this book has vastly improved my knowledge and confidence. It’s a very detailed but easy to follow book.Thank you Bill !
