Great engineering book for beginners
My son needs it for his first engineering class at community college (in CA). Great for beginners. I even read it and learned a lot about engineering.

Great resource!
I bought this book primarily for my daughter because she would like to have a better idea of what to major in when she starts college. She is good in math and science, and although I had an uncle who was a chemical engineer, I really had very little idea of what engineers actually study and what they do.I chose this book because I hoped it would answer not only basic questions about what engineers do, but also serve as a guidebook to help her decide if she would like engineering. There wouldn't be much point in setting out to study it, only to find out somewhere along the line that it wasn't anything like she thought it would be. I think this book does that exceptionally well, not by focusing on the dry basics of what classes she would need to take for this or that major, but by giving examples of what kind of thought processes are used, along with examples of the engineering design process.I like the way the book is laid out, workbook style, with lots of variety, drawings, reflections, and website references pointing to sources of more information. It is easy to read, skim, and gleen an amazing amount of good advice and motivation for success, specifically success in engineering, but the tools in this book can apply just as well for other disciplines of study as well.

Good read, will be reference throughout my life.
I took an intro to engineer class about 2 semesters ago. This book is truly great to get yourself focused and on the right path to achieve your goals. It is an easy read, but the advice and information in the book will have you referring back to it so that you can apply it to your real life. Some may seem like common sense like prioritizing your tasks and what daily tasks that we do everyday like watching tv, going out drinking with out friends and partying til late unnecessary and a burden to your goal (of obtaining a BS in engineering).Total common sense and yet many of us will play games on our phone or scroll through the Internet than study.my professor arranged for the author to speak to the class.(This class had many guest speakers). It was pretty awesome, though he mainly repeats what is in his book, trying to gage how many of the students read his book and hopefully convinced everyone that this success book is the real deal. Not a step to step instruction book to getting a degree, but guidelines to motivate you, pushing you toward your goals.

A rather "elementary level" book...but perhaps that's the point?
I purchased this out of need for a class, to note.I'm perhaps a bit "older" and perhaps a bit more "literate" than some, as this book struck me as something written for an audience of middle school children. The caricatures and cartoons made me nauseous after a point.Maybe I'm just too much of a curmudgeon...beats me.HOWEVER, if you're looking for general information about the engineering professions that exist and some facts that accompany the professions, this book may be absolutely perfect...for both you and your sixth-grader.

The Engineering Body of Knowledge
As a professor of Computer Science/Engineering, I think every engineering major candidate should read this book initially. It took for me an additional 5-10 years after graduation to grasp all this information that is readily available in the book. The writer's life story will be a source of inspiration for many "average/normal IQ" students who are unsure about their capacity to pursue an engineering career.
