Hidden gem inside
SO I bought this and I dont own an xbox. Heres why. Inside the 12tb D10 is a Western Digital DC HC520 drive. I quick google of said drive will reveal this is an enterprise grade drive. Coupled with it being on offer for two hundred notes means that when on offer this is a bargain. I stripped the drive out and gave my nas a handy boost. Bit about it as an external drive. The case is plastic fantastic which is disappointing at this price point. Its chunky though and has a small fan. I'll likely reuse the case with an old drive. Either way the drive that came with it is a beast. Very fast with a low margin of error and built to last. The drives literally run all day every day in data centres so will be more than enough for your games collection. The real limit here on performance is the USB interface. Again perfect for games or as an external drive but a true sata connection sets it free.

Best game drive there is until SSD drops in price.
OK, a great product but with drawbacks. Good: 12TB of fast storage supplied by award winning WD Black drive. It clocked up to 250Mbs on the transfer replacing the USB powered Samsung I had on my XBOX One X which maxed out at 125Mbs. Good: Reduced to sub £200 and 3 months Xbox Ultimate Game pass included price this at little over £15 per TB and enough storage for the next gen of gaming. Good and bad: Power supply rather than USB Powered. Includes 2x 7.5W USB Charging ports but means this is always on. Good and bad right!? Good and bad: This thing is always on unless you unplug it. If you don't have your Xbox on FULL OFF this drive will grind away often while your console is on standby. The power light is white, not too bright and slowly pulses away. This always on drive state make response times amazing but there is no power management it seems. Good and bad: Fan not loud (some people complain they don't hear it) but drive grinds/reads can be heard when its quiet. Louder than my other drives. Best external gaming drive there is unless you step up to SSD at 5x the price 1/5th capacity.

Really Noisy and Terribly Slow
I couldn't recommend this drive as it is very noisy and slow when transferring files from my old drive to the new one. My main concern was the noise the drive makes when accessing the drive, be it downloading or playing games, it just seems to be struggling with itself, maybe it is the supposedly active cooling that is causing the problem. The drive is connected to a Xbox series X as well as having been connected to a series S, still the noise, at one point it got that loud I was tempted to send it back as I thought it may be faulty, but having all my games installed on it now, it was more of a hassle to do so than it's worth, Plus if it does indeed fail, at least there will be the warranty, I also have two 8 TB Seagate gaming drives and neither one of them makes anywhere the noise level this one does, also have been attached to the same consoles. All in all the speeds are not what is advertised, game loading speeds are no better than the Seagate drives, the hard drive in this Xbox branded game drive is probably a cheap drive in a flashy branded Xbox game case to increase sales and dupe people into buying it, it really isn't worth the money. Look elsewhere, as whilst it may be advertised as a Xbox branded high performance drive, it certainly doesn't perform like one. I'm sorry to be critical of the western digital drive, I can only report my experience with this drive. Look Elsewhere.

Using as external HD on PC
The 12TB XBox Game Drive is compatible with Windows 10. I regularly get transfer rates of over 200MB/s when used on a USB 3.1 port of a Surface Pro 6 (if transferring to/from another fast drive - don't forget the slowest drive will determine the transfer speed). It is really fast and is great as a backup drive but is a bit noisy compared to modern 3.5in 5400RPM very slow drives. It actually makes the SSD (256GB) in my Surface Pro 6 look slow! Update: Had two of these drives for a year now and both are still working with no problems at all.

Stylish and effective
I'm using this drive to store various large files that are then portable between various systems. I've so far written just over 7 TB to it. The drive performs well and I've found it relatively quiet (when flat rather than upright in the provided cradle when there is then some vibration noise) in operation. I personally like the ridges and WD_Black / Xbox markings as it looks a bit more interesting than the usual 'black box' kind of external drive.

Not cost effective, but a decent size hard-drive, just has low durability and lifespan.
I don't think it's worth the value 200–300 quid for 12TB I bought 3 when they were cheaper, and they are now failing after 2–3 years, that will eventually die for all of them, because it is mechanical [moving parts] these days SSD lasts nearly 50 years or more if you baby it, the rich lobbying all the SSD's that's why they are expensive, but don't Western Digital think it's time to sell these mechanical drives for way less and Amazon can sell them for less too? Come on man let us gamers buy this for £100 so we can each get a couple, the technology is old now by decades. 100 quid sells more you make more money, I will never buy these at 200 quid or more, more people be able to afford it hence more money made. I would not put all your games or files in one basket aka this hard rive, it will eventually die on you, so gotta either have a backup and just delete to make space instead of buying new hard-drive all the time. This will also teach companies not to overprice hardware if you can re-use something, it works better for the economy. Storage capacity-High 12TB that is 12,000gb, but you only get about 10,900gb usable Just how file systems work. Portableness- I wouldn't move this around, it is mechanical and those have moving parts, if they are moved they end up failing and you lose data. Also, don't move the USB cables when they are switched on. Connectivity- Ran it on Windows 7 the best OS on the planet, it is plug and play if not then do this in Windows 7: 1. Right-click *My Computer* (or Computer) on the desktop or Start menu. 2. Click *Manage*. 3. In Computer Management, go to *Storage* > *Disk Management* (left side). 4. Find your new drive—it'll say "Unallocated" or "Not Initialized" Might be unknown in some cases, either way you can right-click the grey area there and initialize for step 5. 5. Right-click the black bar (the whole drive), pick *Initialize Disk*. 6. Choose *MBR* (if under 2TB) or *GPT* (for 12TB—must be GPT, or Windows won't see the full size). Hit OK. 7. Right-click the new unallocated space. 8. Pick *New Simple Volume*. 9. Click Next, keep the max size (it'll be around 10.9TB), Next again. 10. Assign a drive letter (like E: or whatever's free), Next. 11. Format: File system *NTFS if using Windows Operating System, Allocation unit size **Default, label it whatever—like E.G "Gaming". Check **Quick Format* if you're impatient (saves time). 12. Finish. Done. It'll show up in My Computer as 10.9TB-ish usable. If it glitches, restart—Windows 7's picky with big drives sometimes. This drive can be used with either games on Xbox which should be ready to play if not when you connect it to Xbox or PlayStation it will ask you to format it, and it is automated hence plug and play. It can also be used on desktops and computers as a file drive. Even at 7200 RPM, this mechanical drive's one of the fastest HDD's [Hard-disk drive], but 300 quid? Nah, too steep. Grab a 4-8TB SSD instead if you can find a decent price, they last 10–15 years no problem with normal use; they only wear from heavy writes. Light stuff like games or docs? Could easily hit 50-100+ years. Way quieter, way faster better value for money.
