Can you leave the back piece off so I can feed wires though the top slot of the tall nighstand?

Definitely do not keep the back off. That goes for all pieces of furniture that are made this way. It seems like you could because it’s just basically like thick cardboard. But that back piece always plays a very important role in keeping the entire piece sturdy. One way to test this yourself is before you put that piece on any type of furniture, try moving the furniture around. Then put the piece on and try moving it around. You’ll be able to see the difference.
