Sam Elliot Westerns Collection (DVD)Rough Riders In 1898 the US government, led by Theodore Roosevelt (Tom Berenger) back when he was still a young, ambitious Naval Secretary, intervenes on the side of the Cuban rebels in their struggle against Spanish rule. Always ready for action, Roosevelt leaves the confines of the sidelines and forms a volunteer cavalry regiment which later became infamously known as the "Rough Riders." Roosevelt's regiment brings together volunteers from all corners of the nation to fight against a far superior adversary in one of the most rousing victories in American history. You Know My Name In six months, the population of Cromwell, Oklahoma, has climbed from 500 to 10,000. Boom times have come to the oil-rich town. So has a new breed of criminal. You Know My Name is the fact-based story of Bill Tilghman, a lawman and former partner of Wyatt Earp confronted by an emerging era when outlaws run whiskey instead of cattle and are likely to tote a tommy gun as carry a six-gun. An ideally cast Sam Elliott plays Tilghman, whose life takes on a newfangled wrinkle of its own. Tilghman makes a moving picture of his Old West exploits; and the success of that silent film, The Passing of the Oklahoma Outlaws, spreads his reputation like a brushfire. But that reputation may mean nothing to a thug (Arliss Howard) who hides behind a badge. Desperate Trail Amiable con man Jack Cooper is on a westbound stagecoach, headed for the next batch of suckers who will mistake him for an easy mark. Fiery Sarah O'Rourke rides the same coach, handcuffed to lawman Bill Speakes and headed for the hangman. In a few hours, all should reach their destinations. But the trail they travel takes an unexpected turn: Cooper and O'Rourke are soon off the stage and running for their lives. The law ends and the chase begins in a very alive tale of wanted-dead-or-alive fugitives (Linda Fiorentino and Craig Sheffer) pursued by a marshal (Sam Elliott) who's a law unto himself.]]> Review: Three great films-Don’t pass them up! - This DVD package had 3 excellent films featuring Sam Elliott (an actor born to be a cowboy in films). I first saw him star in a great television series called “Once an Eagle”. He always comes across as a believable man of the West. All the films in this film package were great. Highly recommended. Sam Elliot Western Collection(Rough Riders/You Know My Name/The Desperate Trail
I just think Sam Elliott is great- whether playing the villain -as on "the desperate trail"or the good guy in "You know my name" and there were varying shades in his portrayal of Bucky O'Neill the matter of fact, pulling no punches, doggedness as the no nonsense sheriff to the sinister and ruthless and tough as nails Rough Riders captain.Gary Busey is just plain unpredictable and far out EXCELLENT as General Joe Wheeler in" Rough Riders". The shoot outs on these movies are exceptional as on "Trail" the opening scene with the bungled stage hold-up featuring finely cast blood thirsty killer/robbers, must be one of the best western action scenes for realism, and Mate there is more to come!! The clothing of all the VERY FINE actors is in faithful keeping with the traditional clothing of the Old West and the same consideration for accuracy of dingy portrayal of the old saloons, hotels, people scratching out an existence, the jail, even the dim lighting the whole atmosphere is very well done. No-Excellent -Yeah!!!

Traditional Sam Elliott - Tough As Nails
For those of us who appreciate "good & great" Westerns - This Collection is a must have. Actors such as: Sam Elliott, Tom Selleck, John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, (and others) seemed born to play Western character roles. This Collection will not let you down. In the Rough Riders, actor Tom Barrenger playing Teddy Roosevelt. Sam is the Seasoned D.I. type for all Basic Training, and battles, in the Spanish American War of 1898. The other two films portray Sam as the relatively soft speaking - don't ask twice type good guy - but do not cross him too much or else, character. Kind of similar to his roles in "The Sacketts", and "Conagher", both of those films are now Classic Westerns. So buy this set, you will not be dissatisfied, and Amazon's pricing is great.

Great movies.
I'm a big Sam Elliott fan. Absolutely loved the Rough Riders. Great movie about a forgotten part of our history. Can't say enough good things about Conaugher. Based on a Louis L'Amour book, you can't go wrong with that. Had mixed feelings about the Desperate Trail. All the discs played well, sound was good, picture quality was sharp.

I wrote a multi level review that did not go against any guidelines but it got deleted by one of Amazon's inexperienced staff, anyway. I will not repeat that lengthy work here, however.... The dvd is good quality. The films are excellent, though the final film based on the final months of a real life hero of the old wild west, now set in the developing heydays of the 1920s. The story was somewhat wanting in its structure and is the lesser of the 3 movies. The 1st two are brilliantly written and produced. The acting and dialogue are second to none. Great collection.

Sam Elliott is one of my favorite western actors, he has a starring role in a streaming series leading a group of immigrants to their destination. This collection has 3 films, the Desperate Trail is #1, Elliott is a marshal after fugitives Linda Fiorentino and Craig Sheffer. The Rough Riders is my favorite, this is a salute to Teddy Roosevelt who led a group of volunteers during the Spanish American War, Tom Berenger plays Roosevelt as he leads his Riders up San Juan Hill. You Know My Name is the third movie, it is a transition period in American History as he confronts outlaws running illegal whiskey.
