Q: Mine is still leeching tannins even after 6+ hours of boiling, any suggestions?

I boiled for about an hour. The water was almost black. As some reviewers mentioned. Get this into cold water immediately. If you live in a cold climate just put a bucket of water in the garage and soak it for a few days. More tannings will come out but if 3 gallons of water isn't stained too badly then it will be fine for the aquarium. Change out the water every day or two. I always have carbon in my aquariums and that will take out all the discoloration. I have read that it also takes out the PH reducing benefits. So far I have found that it will allow this to "tug" a little on the PH and KH downward keeping the PH from being closer to 8 than 7. With the carbon it won't let it go too low... just keeps it from going too high. I am ordering a second piece because I plan on adding a male and female bristlenosed pleco to my 75g tank and they need it to rasp on. They can lay flat on the bottom and don't take up much room. Also work great for attaching plants.

I had the same problem a few years back when I first added Mopani wood to my tanks and was horrified. It only happened to the areas with the light "blonde" color and smooth surface. BUT... no reason to worry. First off, it's harmless, 100% natural (bacterial bloom, the wood is cycling in your tank) and will eventually disappear - give a week or two. Scrubbing will only extend the agony as it will start the process over each time you do this. To help the process along, you can do a couple of things: 1. Add algae eaters to the tank. Loaches and plecos for example LOVE this stuff, many fish do. 2. Let it soak, get fuzzy and then take it out and set it in direct sunlight for a day or two. This can help. As for tannins: fish love it, humans don't. Use Seachem PURIGEN filter media. Clears your tank water up.

Q: I have a 5 gallon fluval spec would the large or small piece be better?

I would get the small. I have a 45 Gallon tank and the large piece of driftwood is standing vertically, it almost reaches the top.
