Nintendo DSi - Matte Black [video game]

The Nintendo DSi brings a cool level of interactivity to your DS. You can now record sounds and take photos - both front and back - with your DS! On the downside, it only plays DS games - it cannot play old style games. Nintendo DSi Review Rather than giving you a lot of cold statistics that you can find on the many marketing sites out there, let me instead give you my actual, personal observations after playing and using this DS. We have owned pretty much every version of a Nintendo handheld that has come out over the years and avidly enjoy them. This Nintendo DSi is definitely a worthy successor to this line. For players of older games, it's important to note the DSi only plays DS style games, not any older games. That is quite fine by me. There are a TON of DS games out at this point and many older games are compiled onto DS format. If you really want to play an older style game, get one of those older style units. The units are very cheap at this point. The focus of the DSi on only DS games means it is light, thin, and very easy to use. The DSi has TWO cameras - one facing forwards, one facing backwards. This means you can easily take photos of yourself and friends! We had a ton of fun taking photos of each other, of our pets, and using all of their morphing and kaleidoscope features to make great images out of them. You can save the images to a SD card for use on your computer and printing out. I love the microphone tools. You can record 10 second blurbs and add harmonies, raise or lower the pitch, and do other operations on them. This is a lot of fun as well. The unit comes to you pre-charged which is awesome. It means you can start playing games the moment you get it. Instant gratification is a good thing! The image size is great, larger than previous DS units. The audio quality is great as well! This really is an awesome handheld gaming unit for all of the latest generation games. I'm really enjoying their easy to use interface, and looking forward to all of the games I'll be able to download wirelessly. It's important to note that the DSi uses a different type of charger than the original DS, so the two aren't interchangeable. The DSi of course comes with its own charger so you don't have to worry about buying one. It also comes with an extra stylus. I am really enjoying the DSi. You might say "it's only a little brighter, only a little larger, only a little lighter." However, when you're talking about a tiny unit that fits on your hand, it is often those tiny improvements that make a huge difference. The small lightness boost makes it easier to hold and carry in a full purse. The brightness and better sound give that much more fun to the gaming experience. While some might scoff at the microphone and camera, both are great fun. The higher quality sound means I can actually now use this as a MP3 player! It uses AAC format. This is a standard format and there are free converters out there if you tend to use MP3 or other formats. To summarize, I love this unit. If you don't have any DS unit I would definitely get this one rather than one of the previous DS units. If you already have a DS or DS Lite I'd recommend giving those to a younger sibling or friend, and getting a new DSi for yourself. I purchased this DSi, for my niece as a replacement for one my mother purchased for her in 2009. Although I purchased a used console it is working perfectly and I think a testament to the longevity of the console. Although the technologies may be a bit outdated compared to today's standards it does still have nifty technologies (apart from the ability to play games) that my, now 17 year old, niece still utilizes to some extent. -The camera and the "distortion" effects it is capable of is still entertaining. When she first received in 2009 she/we had loads of fun taking crazy pictures with various effects. We've discovered that is still fun to goof around with though it is has been surpassed technology wise by many apps available for smart phones and tablets now (2016). Still fun and functional otherwise and the photos can either be stored on the device or on an SD card, which wasn't included but accommodates any SD card up to 32 GB. -The Internet is also useable in a pinch but times have changed greatly and she prefers her laptop and smartphone for Internet purposes. Altogether I am extremely happy with my purchase and so is my niece. -She is still able to play her large collection of games without purchasing the 3DS, which gives her motion sickness, and she expressed zero interest in the Nintendo 2DS. She loves this one, as she did her original, and that's what mattered to me most of all. The proven durability, based on the lifespan of her original DSi, is the icing on the cake. This console will eventually be one of her childhood "classics" , just as the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) console is for me and was for her father.

I bought the DSi for my 9-year-old grandson. He'd been wanting a handheld game system, and a camera, so I figured that both in one was a great thing. The boy is in love! He adores this thing and takes really good care of it. He plays on and off, totaling a couple of hours a day, and also takes it on car trips or when his parents go to visit people who don't have kids. It's really good for keeping him occupied and preventing boredom. The camera works well and he enjoys playing with the various lenses, which are easy for him to use. We have used the internet connection once or twice, but he's not much into that yet. Overall, while this is a slightly expensive toy for a smaller child, I feel that it was money well-spent. My grandson enjoys this immensely, the games seem to run from $15 to $35 (sometimes slightly less or more, depending on where you work) which means we can afford to buy the for him and it won't be too hard for him to earn game money himself. Right now, he's had the DSi for a month and has two games, one of which is educational and which he enjoys as much as he does the Mario game. I did buy the starter kit for this system, and that really made a difference; he had everything he needed to get started right away!

I pre-ordered the black DSi and Amazon didn't disappoint. It arrived on the 6th, just 1 day after the Sunday release date. I already own a DS Lite and I have really, really enjoyed it. I bought this unit for the larger screens, the ability to purchase and download games directly to the unit via the new DSiware (like WiiWare). I installed a 16 gb Ultra II SD card for storage. If you want to connect to your wireless network remember this: If you use a WEP key you can use connection setup spots 1-6. If you use WPA or WPA2, you have to use connection setup spots 4-6. It works really well. I registered with the online shop and they gave 1000 points free towards downloading games in exchange for the points. Currently there are games ranging from 200 to 800 points so you can get more than 1 game for the 1000 free points. I didn't think I would like the camera or the recordable sound features but I ended up having a good time with them. The top screen displays my pictures and you can start a slide show function that rotates through your photos using nice transitions and background music. The larger screens are easier on my eyes. The sound is improved to my ears. The matte black finish means no finger prints. The menu system is an excellent feature. This design idea seems to lend itself to a longer life. If you are a Nintendo fan, you will enjoy the changes but you cannot play GBA games on this. They gave up the GBA slot for the SD slot. If you don't have a DS, you are really missing out on a entertaining 'hobby' that isn't for the young only. It provides many hours of entertainment and a great way to get your mind to 'let go' of the day's stresses. 3 generations of our family each have one.

Got these for my granddaughters fo Christmas. This is about the only toy they play with now. Can add many games, music, take pictures, etc. No regrets on this purchase! UPDATE: This item stopped working 2 days before the 1-year warranty was up. My daughter contacted Nintendo so that she could send it in for repair, only to find out that the item was refurbished and the serial number showed it had been previously sold in Japan. We paid for a new item, not a refurbished one. The Vendor was contacted but refused to make this right by exchanging the item for a new one. My daughter then contacted Amazon hoping they woud make it right but was not even allowed to speak with a supervisor. She was told that because she sent the email to them one day before the warrant expired that she was ineligible for an exchange or refund. They counted it as a full 365 days. Amazon has finally agreed to give her a $50.00 credit towards another system but its just so disappointing that Worldwide Distributors is allowed to sell used items as new ones. Its deceptive to the people who purchase their products. Just beware if using this company.

I was debating getting a new handheld gaming system. My kids both have PSP's but I don't like them very much. I like something more simple to control (hey, I'm 36). I don't want to have to figure out all the little buttons, especially on something this small. The DS has the stylus/touch screen, so that is what initially drew me. I did my research trying to choose between an iTouch and a DSLite. Naturally, the iTouch can do much more, but hey, it's also much pricier. If money were no object, I'd probably have gotten the iTouch. Anyway, so it was between the DSi and the DSLite. I scoured the net trying to get everyone's opinion. I don't already have a DSLite, so I was starting fresh. Many people complained that the 2 are too similar, not to bother upgrading, and that may be so. But if you, like me, don't have either, go ahead and get the DSi. I love being able to browse the net (although it is limited), check my email on the go, take pics, and those were big issues for me. You're not going to be giving up your puter in favor of surfing with the DSi, it's much slower & aggravating to navigate around the page when compared to a puter, but it's still really good when faced with nothing. I also really like the game selections of the DS. There aren't many downloadable DSiWare games, yet, but you can use all the DS games on the DSi. I'm a "mature" player. I don't want shoot 'em & kill 'em games. I don't want typical teen type games. I want puzzle style, Diner Dash type, and for that type of gaming, the DSi can't be beat. It comes downloaded with a calendar function, which is nice for scheduling/planner use. I carry this around in my purse everywhere. I've had it for almost a month and I am glad I chose this one!

Ok, so I'm one of THOSE moms that bought this for my 3 year old. If you're thinking of doing the same, then this review is for you. My son LOVES it! He asks for his DS all the time, and even knows that the "pen" is really called a stylus, or "styluth." For the most part he's figured out how to work it on his own. I think this is a great introduction to electronics at his age. This is important to us because electronics will be a huge part of his life as he grows up in a world very different from what we had. I went into the settings and parent-locked as much as I could. One thing that I couldn't lock that I would have liked to is the brightness. Sometimes he complains about it being too dark because he messes with these settings. I have to then fix it for him. Also, a big FYI, you can parent lock the ability to use any Nintendo points to purchase online material, but guess what? You CANNOT lock the ability to buy MORE points. A mistake on Nintendo's part? I think not. And they don't give refunds on points, ever. Lucky for us we don't use the internet capabilities. But I read this in the manual. What I don't like (resulting in the loss of one star): * Only connects to a WAP network. Lame. We use WPA-PSK, so that's why we don't have it online. Not an issue at this point. * If it is online, your kid can buy points if you have credit info saved. You can't disable this. * Camera is activated by the bumpers (two buttons on the edge). My kid keeps activating it on accident, and so do I. * Doesn't play mp3 files. Seriously?!?! What numbskull's idea was that? Must convert to m4a. Who really uses that? So we don't have music files on it right now. What my 3 year old was able to do within 1 month of messing around with it and just a little bit of help: * Turn it on and off. * Pull stylus out and put it away. * Navigate the menus. * Activate and use the camera. We have a 2GB card in it so he has tons of room, which is great since kids have no discrimination on what makes a "good" picture! * Use the fun picture distortion tools. * Load and play games. * Swap out games (knows not to touch the metal part). * Use the music editor to make "music." I recommend getting screen protectors. We found a cheap kit for $10 that included 2 sets of screen protectors, 2 extra styluses, a travel case, game cases, ear buds (crappy, though) and some other stuff. We have only used the screen protectors and styluses so far, but still well worth it.[...] Deluxe Starter Kit for DSi. After two months it's been used extensively, making us happy that the money was well spent. It's been dropped several times and has held up perfectly. I'm confident that we'll get many good years out of this. I'm tempted to buy our other boy one for his 2nd birthday...but that may be a bit too early. ;) I'm just afraid they'll go off the market soon with the 3DS out. I'll be watching, especially for a price drop. No, I am not writing this to brag about my kid. He's a normal 3 year old. I don't think he's a genius. But we also don't underestimate him. If you're considering getting your little one started on electronics, I think this is a great first buy! I recommend this one over the regular DS because it has a camera, which is a huge hit with the kids. Enjoy! UPDATE 2/4/2014 This thing is a beast!!! We've had it for nearly 4 years and it's still going strong. It's been dropped dozens of times and dragged around everywhere. I have three kids now, ages 2 - 5 1/2, and they all love it and play on it to varying degrees. There is a huge variety of games available, so there's something for everyone. It's such a great learning tool, not just for what it is, but also just for the general concept of "figure it out on your own" since we almost never help them with it. They pretty much just play the games and take pictures with it, and sometimes play with this sound editor thing, just to make noise. We still don't have music on it and at this point I'm sure we never will because having to convert to m4a is dumb. Nor do we utilize the internet connection, so I kinda wish I saved a bucks and got the DS, not the DSi. I sometimes think of getting more of these, but the kids have such short attention spans that I don't think 3 devices would get nearly enough game play to make them worth it. One to share works very well for us for now.

I’m really good shape for used product

Originally bought this product so I could trade Pokémon between games, and I didn't expect much out of it. However, this little Ds turned out to be really fun to play, and after a few minutes you barely notice the difference in size between it and the XL counterparts. Not to mention, the only aspects of it that could be considered "poor quality" that I've noticed after having it for around 2 weeks are limited to very minor paint scratches near the hinges, with absolutely nothing else being wrong with it. For the cheapest price I could find on tia specific Ds, and the speed at which it arrived, I would definitely recommend this item for anyone looking to buy.

It arrived on time in good condition. I’m very pleased with everything.
