How often should the water be changed for fresh water?

I have 5 egg layers, in the winter months the water lasts 30-45 days. In the hotter months you would need to change or add water every 25 days. This is also when I scrub it out and clean it. if it is properly sealed I don't not have problems with it growing algae or anything else.

Could you set it outside the coop up against the chicken wire would the chickens be able to drink out of the nipples?

Mine is inside the chicken wire run. Initially I had it on the ground but ended up placing it on a cinder block to raise the level of the nipples to a height my chickens were used to. I think your idea might work esp if you raise it up.

Where can I get the water heater that goes with this?

You can buy a de-icer on Amazon or some local feed and seed stores carry them as well.

If using a deicer (purchased separately) to keep the water from freezing, will that also keep the external wet nipples from freezing?

the waterer works well but in colder temps it freezes on the wall against the nipples ... this morning it was 22 deg. and we found the waterer frozen on top and on the nipple wall behind the nipples.....the de-icer I bought costs $40 and is still working but evidently is not enough to stop freezing behind the nipples.... I suspect the volume of water is too much but who knows ? Disappointing because of the cost of over $100 for the waterer.....
