they look like regular ponytail holders are they acually braided?

They are not braided. They are regular ponytail holders. The elastic is quite strong. Not like other brands that I have tried. They hold their elasticity use after use.

What is the diameter unstretched?

How do these differ from hair ties made for men?

As a woman with long hair, I know nothing about hair ties made for men. I do know that they are better than most hair ties because they are seamless and do not get stuck in my hair or pull my hair out when I remove them. I only buy this style and brand for that reason.

Do they fit well for box braids?

I am unfamiliar with box braids. They are a good medium size hair tie that work well. They do stretch out sometimes and need to be discarded. Overall I do recommend these.
