Good Hudson Hawks
I've bought and given away several of these Hudson Bay Hawks. In my opinion it is the best camping tomahawk Cold Steel makes. People complaining about a loose head don't understand how tomahawks work, what they're designed for. You drive the head down onto the shaft toward the crown if you want it tight. If you can't grasp that, you should have bought an ax instead, so you could have that head fly off when the wedges and Crown Wood loosen up. Tom Hawk shafts are designed to keep the head from flying off the top unless you've damaged the head by throwing it or something similar. This tool splits wood well. I never complain about Cold Steel Hawks arriving a bit dull since they can be sharpened. The money you pay for these make them well worth the upkeeping modification for the quality you generally get. I saw one review about a broken blade. I've never seen that happen to one of these before and don't expect to see it happen again before a few thousand reviews come by. These are excellent tools.

VALUE AND QUALITY!
Very nice tomahawk! nice strait grain handle and the hawk with the poll (for driving tent stakes) is perfect. The edge came with a protector but needs further sharpening(to be expected). I will be removing the hex screw and welding the hole closed as I don't want the function of being able to remove the head. I will permanently mount the head with a wooden and steel wedge and epoxy! For $30 this is an absolute steel! BUY IT!

Quality seems ok…..
Seems like a decent product so far, I was just a little surprised that the sticker on one side says American Tomahawk Company and the sticker on the other side says Made in Taiwan. As long as it lasts I guess it’s better than made in China.

1 pound 1/2 ounce Carpenters Style Hatchet Head
I need shelter. My woodlot looks like a bunch of round 4 x 4's to skinny 6 x 6's. A new 'heavy eye' sledge hammer handle has dimensions same as Cold Steel Hawk Lineup. Bought a "second", less expensive and this was just a try. Heavy eye stick fits perfect on hammer side, needs a little rasp work on blade side to fit, easy. Drop sapling, hew one side, from there measure and cut to make simple post and beam building. This light head on the long stick gives a lot of easily controlled power. Follows the line well, no fear of the pry sideways thing with that much stick through the eye. I liked it so much I got another and put it on old sledge handle, like it a little better than my carpenter hatchet. Photo 1 shows all tools used installing C.S. Hudson Bay head on heavy eye Beaver Tooth #2 stick, wood pieces cutoffs from top of stick, green extra coarse file for centering edge and cutting initial bevel, red mill file for sharpening. L: 33 3/4 inch, W: 2 lb. 8 oz. Photo 2 shows end of stick in head. Photo 3 shows my 1991 C.S. Trail Hawk with hammer end fully cut off sporting its first replacement stick after 33 years of hard use. (Stick trimmed to 16 in. after photo, finished W: 16.1 oz.) The carpenter hatchet I am comparing everything to mounted, a dozen years ago, on old broken sledge handle. L: 14 1/2 in. W: 1 lb. 14.6 oz. New C.S. Hudson Bay Hawk mounted on another broken sledge handle. L: 17 1/2 in. W: 1 lb. 11.6 oz. Last is my Marbles 'Pocket Chopper' mounted on this (the 4th) handle in 1991 when it was replaced with the above Trail Hawk. L: 11 1/2 in. W: 14.4 oz.

Old squeal misses the mark again
I recieved my old squeal hawk without much disappointment . of course I wasn't expecting all that much to begin with. Old squeal has a reputation for taking great designs and poorly executing them using the cheapest materials they can get away with. I was looking for a little hatchet to use when trapping. Something smaller than my eastwing for trimming back a little brush and driving a stake when need be. The Hudson Bay version looked like it would be the hawk of choice. Squeal has a company in Taiwan make these under the name American tomahawk company.IT IS NOT THE AMERICAN TOMAHAWK COMPANY OF VIETNAM FAME. Squeal stole their name. It came woefully dull with a grind that looked more at home on a chisel than an axe After correcting that and throwing the idiotic set screw away, i removed the sharp edge on the inside of the head .Properly shaped the handle and after soaking it in diesel for a couple of days reinstalled it. After using it for a couple of hours I shortened the handle 3 inches and resharpened it.. After two days of cleaning up shooting lanes. I have formed an opinion of this product. Head is good shape for my purposes, steel is mediocre temper non-existent. Plan on resharponing frequently Ok squeal needs to ship without head attached to handle and save a couple of bucks by not drilling tapping leave the set screw in Taiwan axes haven't needed them for thousands of years and don't need them now. The notorious black paint hides the forging scale. It sticks in wood. Uneeded. I ordered a crkt version as well which is a more user ready tool and seems to hold a better edge. In short ol squeal makes.a fine toy for throwing at trees and playing dress up . I may temper the head later and see if I can get it to hold an edge

Love this. Love the price. Can't wait to have a hatchet burying ceremony!
Bought this for two reasons...and I'm happy with the product and price. Bought another one for a gift a while back. I bought it to bury in the back yard of my ex in a ...well, ah...hatchet burying ceremony! 28 yrs married 22 years divorced: a perfect 50 years! I do plan to sneak around and dig it up afterwards as it is good to lay by the fireplace for making kindling in the winter. It's 112 degrees hear today so I'm guessing that's a while off!

Very happy. Typical ill fitted head due to that stupid set screw.( i have a jar full of them now) but like most experienced users i remove them and sand the handle which this one needed near no sanding ( sometimes they need alot). I have almost all the cold steel Hawks. I dont have the more weapon ones that are only for throwing ect. I really like the pipe hawk but this is my new favorite for working. If I dont expect much work I bring the trail hawk. Anyway great hawk came more ready than most out of the box. I did need to sharpen it but cold steel does that so the end user can put their preferred edge on it as it should be.

Along with the axe, I received 15 small packing boxes. What do I do with them? Do you want them returned? I am very puzzled, do you know something I don't know? Am I moving and haven't been told yet?
