did this kit come with a display stand originally?

No it did not come with a display stand

What type of material is this model made out of? Is it all plastic or does it have some metal parts? Do you get the sense that it will break easily?

It's all plastic and some parts are rubber. If you have the stand, the model will stay perfectly in place. Stands cost about $8-10. My other model (http://www.amazon.com/Bandai-Deathscythe-Hell-Master-Grade/dp/B004EH68Z6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396755733&sr=8-1&keywords=gundam+deathscythe) fell and it didn't break, it became a little easier to move the parts but the stand stopped it from being flimsy. They will stay in place depending on how you pose it without the stand. So they're pretty sturdy model kits. I enjoyed them a lot. Hope this helps.
