Quantum Fishing Smoke Pt 10Bb Spinning Reel

I love the look of this reel. It is light and smooth. Ive used it all season so far and it continues to perform without issues. I plan to buy a couple more to replace my other reels that are not quite up to par. Plus the price here was $30 cheaper than the Sportsman's Warehouse in Lexington. I also got free shipping from Amazon whereas SW wanted to charge me $20 more for shipping. Overall, a $50 savings! Thanks guys...I'll be sure I give you my business when I purchase the two additional reels!

I haven't purchased a spinning reel for several years, so I was eager to see what new advances have been made. After reading a few reviews I decided on the new Quantum Smoke (SL30PTI) with a carbon fiber rotor and ceramic drag system. It looked high-tech, extremely light, and was Outdoor Life's Editors Choice, so I was excited when I received it and began to spool the reel. After winding several yards of no. 8 monofilament, I noticed the reel spooled unevenly and to one side instead of being flat and straight. Taking off the spool I saw a slight bend at the end of the main rotor shaft. Examining some of the other parts under the spool showed indications of rough machining with burrs on some of the metal parts. The owner's manual has little information about simple reel maintenance and refers to an Anti-Reverse switch at the bottom of the reel which this model does not have. I'm not sure if I received a bad reel and not wanting to take another chance I returned it. After checking out another Quantum Smoke and several other reels at a local store, I found that the Shimano Stradic was much smoother and better finished for slightly more money. In fact even some of Shimano's lower priced models, as well as other manufacturers, had smoother retrieving and a better overall feel in hand. You need to make your own comparisons and from what I found Quantum needs to place greater emphasis on quality control and manufacturing standards rather than marketing hype and blowing smoke.

I ordered my reel (size 25) from a vendor on Amazon. It came with some left over braid lines and a broke box. It was obviously a returned product. But I still decided to give it a try. After spooled with some line, I noticed the reel has an uneven winding problem. The rear end of the spool had more line than the front end did. Quantum obviously has quality problem. Looking at other reviews, I found out I was not the only one with this problem.In addition to the winding problem, my reel also has a non-linear drag control. The drag control is very sensitive in the middle range which I think is a poor design or defect. I also did a low temperature test by putting the reel in my freezer for 45 minutes. The reel did become very stiff and tight. So if you want to do a lot of winter steelhead fishing, you need think twice before buying this reel.

I received the reel from walmart.com, and although it looked nice and did not weigh much, the line did not spool evenly. I don't know if it was intended by Quantum, but it makes me feel like this is a cheap reel. I did not care too much for the unevenness at first; however, I found that when there is no tension on the line--using a topwater, weightless trickworm and creating a lot of slack, for instance--the line spools off the spool at the bottom of the spool, if that makes any sense. I think if I was somehow able to lower the spool just a tad, it would fix the problem, but, then, the line would probably be spooling off the top of the spool. Therefore, I give this a three out of five. I like the looks and the light weight, but, what good is there in a reel that performs badlyy? Be warned, people.

Looks are amazing with this reel but thats where the good end,Pros- Looks amazing paired with a Shimano crucial or an abu virtias, Light weight.Cons - A lot of flex in the reel seat. poor drag not smooth at all. No durability. Landed a nice 5lb large mouth on a senko and after that it started grinding took apart and found the pinion gear was shot. this was after only a week of light duty use.For the $150 you spend on this reel you can buy much better quality. I like quantum but they dropped the ball on this reel for sure. I personally own 2 of their exo reels and love them 1 in the 50 size for striper and 1 in 30 for bass the ex blows the smoke out of the water. i would also recommend the oakum helios. Very light good looking reel that actually works and holds up to a beating i actually managed to pull in a 45" northern pike with the 30 size reel that killed a senko on the retrieve.

Great reel! I've got 20lb braid on it, and it handles large salmon / steelhead well in the Pacific NW. Smoothest drag i've ever experienced! Well made all around. I'll be purchasing the bate caster model next.
