Color of the water is irrelevant. Conduct the test as the directions tell you. The test strip hangs above the water.

You may also not have detectable levels (for this particular kit) in your water. You may need the low range or ultra low range test kit. Can this test be used on liquids other than water? Coffee or other beverages?

I do not think so. The test results rely on CAREFULLY seeing the color change in the water - ie. comparing the liquid color to the color chart.
