Does this need to be formatted for mac before using. os high sierra 10.13.6

APFS is also known as “Apple File System,” first introduced with macOS High Sierra. This move coincided with Mac moving to solid-state drives (SSD) on all hardware, as APFS is optimized for SSD storage solutions. APFS will still work on mechanical or hybrid drives, too. On new Macs, APFS is the default file system, as modern Macs all have SSD drives. If you’re formatting a drive for use with a Mac with an SSD – and plan to use the drive with that Mac ONLY – it may be wise to format it to work with APFS file systems as well.
The Mac OS Extended file system is also known as HFS Plus or HFS+, and is the default file system of all Macs from 1998 through now on Macs with mechanical or hybrid drives. Even if a Mac is running macOS High Sierra, if it has a hybrid or mechanical drive, the file system will be Mac OS Extended by default.
 exFAT is a cross-platform solution for use with Mac and Windows devices, now serving as a base for files shared and edited between the two platforms. If you work with Mac and Windows computers often, exFAT may be the best option for your Mac. Keep this in mind. Thank you for this often-asked question. And I have read people stating this ssd device is formatted to exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table) by default which upon speaking to the technical heads at ADATA it is not, rather it is formatted using NTSF (New Technology File System) used by windows PCs by default. But this is easily changed to whatever format works for you and what devices you will be using it the most with.  Formats such NTSF is heavy in that it uses lot of resources and FAT32 has limitations such as limiting the amount of data to something like 4GB.  
1.	exFAT is a lightweight file system that doesn't use a lot of hardware resources to be maintained.

3.	It can store files that are very large, a lot higher than the 4GB limit imposed by FAT32 for instance. 
4.	exFAT is compatible with a lot of different devices and operating systems. According to what I have read, and Wikipedia states exFAT is supported in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 with update KB955704, Windows Embedded CE 6.0, Windows Vista with Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2 (except Windows Server 2008 Server Core), Windows 10, and Mac OS X starting from 10.6.5. exFAT is also supported by most cameras, smartphones and newer gaming consoles such as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. exFAT is also supported by Android's latest versions: Android 6 Marshmallow and Android 7 Nougat. In addition, exFAT is supported by Android since its version 4 came around. And according to, exFAT is also supported by iOS 7 and newer. To make sure your drive can be read by Macs and PCs you need to format it using exFAT. The drawback using exFAT they say I've never experience it and have unplugged and had power outages that disconnected it. ExFAT lacks journaling 
allows the file system to keep records of changes made to files stored on it, useful when data corruption occurs and they can recover broken data. exFAT doesn't have this feature, and that means that data can be corrupted more easily when unexpected. However I swear this has never happened to me It is normal that a drive may dhow a corrupt message fixed by just unmount and restart making sure connections are tight. Make sure that your external drive doesn’t become damaged in the future by always unmounting ejecting the disk properly after using it. Don’t just unplug the USB cable. Your answer is YES or NO depending on whether you will just be using it on Mac or other operating systems like Windows. Ive give you what to format the ssd as to your needs. Hipe it helped.
